About Amy

I have a love for all students and search to find creative ways to help children connect with and value the material they are learning. The more engaged students are -- the more they grow! I have 5 years of classroom experience with Chesapeake Public Schools, during which time I have worked in general education, ASD/LEAD, and LD inclusion. Prior to that, I spent 4 years as a substitute for preK - 12th grade in Title 1 and non-Title 1 schools; therefore, I have a wide range of experience working with students of all ages and backgrounds.

I specialize in math and reading instruction, but can also provide tutoring services for science and social studies. I graduated as the top of scholar of my undergrad and graduate programs, so I understand that hard-work and dedication pay off. These are traits that I strive to model to my students -- somethings are caught, not taught! I have been awarded the Reading Teacher of the Year, and have been recognized for other professional accomplishments with Chesapeake Public Schools. It is my job to be the best that I can be, so that my students can be the best that they can be!

Prior to the first instructional meeting, I would like to have a free consultation meeting to discuss your child's needs. This can be done through a face-to-face appointment, or a phone call. I hold myself to a high standard, and want to ensure that you are completely satisfied with my tutoring as well. For that reason, I will ask for feedback, and I will not bill you for a lesson in which you are unsatisfied with my tutoring. If at anytime you need to cancel a lesson, please provide as much notice as possible, but a minimum of 3 hours notice. I look forward to meeting with you and working with your child!

I have been recognized for two consecutive years for having my class of students show the most math growth in the school. I have been selected to work on a city-wide math team to create lessons and assessments for students in Chesapeake Public Schools.

I received the Reading Teacher of the Year award for 2012-2013. I have taken additional college courses in the areas of reading and writing to stay up-to-date on best practices.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have been teaching for 5 years and have had students with ADD or ADHD every year. Sometimes students are medicated, and sometimes they are not. I understand the needs of these students and have experience practicing strategies to refocus students' attention by checking in with them more frequently, allowing the option of standing rather than sitting, incorporating movement and technology into lessons, and using a number of other techniques to accommodate students with ADD or ADHD.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a licensed PreK-3 teacher with 5 years of experience in third grade. Prior to position I held various long term substitute positions up to 5th grade, and did 4 years of regular substitute teaching for preschool - high school. I have created a Portaportal website which contains links to resources for various elementary core subjects. This provides an entertaining, independent way for children to continue practice between tutoring sessions.

Phonics

In my graduate Early Childhood Education program, my courses spent ample time on phonics strategies. I spend 3 years volunteering in a kindergarten classroom to assist students with phonics. My student teaching was in a first grade setting where I conducted phonics lessons through self-made games and my students' class average on assessments was in the top 75% of the school. Following that experience, I served as a long-term substitute in the ID (intellectually disabled) class where all of my students met their individualized phonics goals for the year. I have continued my education in this area by taking online Reading courses for re-certification. As a third grade teacher, some of my students still require phonemic remediation, so I continue practicing the strategies that I have learned on a regular basis.
