About Lirsen

Hello there! My name is Lirsen and I am looking forward to working with you. I am a recent graduate of the College of William & Mary (Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa) with knowledge in many fields. I am able to speak five languages, including English and Russian. I can thus offer a wide array of tutoring services, including English (Reading, Writing, and Speaking), Foreign Languages (Russian and German), Argumentation and Debate, Government, History, and others. I can also help with SATs.

My approach to tutoring involves getting to know your needs and thereafter applying my expertise. My goal for each session is to keep my students challenged, but to ensure that they leave with the strategies under their belt to ensure their success with the material, going forward. I gauge their ability to use these strategies and techniques via periodic assessments and discussions with parents, as necessary.

As a tutor, I believe that every student should have the opportunity to learn, make mistakes, and overcome obstacles without feeling like daily hurdles are a reflection of their intelligence or value as a person. I believe that everyone has unique strengths and weaknesses and should be able to learn in a way that capitalizes on their strengths. I believe the classroom setting is not for everyone and that most learning occurs when the subject at hand can be made personally relevant and engaging.

If you are a non-native English speaker looking to improve your skills, please contact me. If you are a student looking to improve scores on standardized tests, I can help you. If you want to get better grades in Social Studies subjects, send me a message. If you want help learning a second language, I have plenty of experience with that. If you want to become a better speaker and debater, let me help you.

I have a flexible schedule . Contact me so we can work together on your needs!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Russian

I completed a degree in Russian & Post-Soviet Studies, taking four years of Russian language courses. I was recognized nationally by the American Council of Teachers of Russian (ACTR) as an outstanding student in Russian studies through the 2015 ACTR Post-Secondary Russian Scholar Laureate award. I also received an Honorable Mention at the Fourteenth Annual ACTR NATIONAL Post-Secondary Russian Essay Contest, a contest which had 946 participants from 47 universities. I am also a member of the Dobro Slovo Slavic Studies Honor Society. I completed my major with a GPA of 3.97 from 4.00.
