About ROGER

I am a graduate of Durham University, UK, and earned my doctoral degree in Chemistry from the University of East Anglia. After working as a research chemist for several years around the US, I settled in Hampton Roads, and have since taught 20+ full time years college level Chemistry. I also have 6+ years one-on-one tutoring experience in Math, Chemistry and Physics from middle school through college levels. I believe I have helped a lot of students in quite a few subjects.

I love to effectively communicate knowledge and explain things, and pride myself on breaking down difficult material into bite-sized pieces. I have a passion for helping students "get it", whether by drawing on everyday applications, or by carefully administering doses of my legendary sense of humor (I can't help it) and warm personality. Most of them look forward to their tutoring sessions with me, because they know they will learn a lot, and feel comfortable and encouraged.

I have tutored Math one-on-one for over 6 years, including Prealgebra, Algebra I / II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus/Analysis, and Calculus. In addition, I have considerable experience with test prep, notably SAT math, but also ACT, GED, and others. One summer, I successfully tutored one student a year's worth of Precalculus in 20 hours - he passed a placement test shortly thereafter and, as a result, was admitted into Calculus at his new school.

I have a Ph.D. in Chemistry, which I have taught at Community College full time for 20+ years. In addition, I have gained tremendous experience tutoring Physics and Chemistry one-on-one for over 6 years. I can anticipate a lot of the usual topics that students must master, including Honors and AP material, as well as college level (ODU, VA TECH, etc.). I received "Best of Chesapeake" in Tutoring for the last 4 years.

If you are in Middle School, High School, or College and need help in Math, Chemistry or Physics, contact me. I will break it down for you, go at your pace, and make you feel comfortable, armed with knowledge, encouraged and (hopefully) amused by my usually-not-cheesy jokes.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

I have always loved Algebra, and have tutored this subject to many high school students, as well as some military, for over 6 years. I know about equations, graphs, roots, conic sections, algebraic fractions, radicals, etc.

ASVAB

I have a lot of experience with Test Prep, including ASVAB. I can show how to think about a problem and do the math involved in it.

Calculus

I studied Calculus in high school, and have been tutoring this subject for over 6 years. I tutored an Engineering Calculus student recently, and he was very satisfied with the results. Topics have included limits, differentiation, antiderivatives, optimization, linear approximation, etc.

Chemistry

I have been teaching Chemistry at Community College full time for over 20 years. I am very familiar with all topics in College Chemistry I and II, as well as Organic Chem. I have also tutored Chemistry one-on-one for over 6 years.

GED

I tutored recently a GED student who left me a great review !

Organic Chemistry

I have a Ph.D. specifically in Organic Chemistry. I taught Organic Chemistry I and II for 2 years at Community College. In addition, I have tutored this subject one-on-one several times over the past few years.

Physics

I have been tutoring Physics I and II for several years now. I have tutored forces, conservation energy, circular motion, magnetism, electricity, laws of motion, lenses and mirrors, etc. I have tutored high school Physics and also college.

Reading

I've always been very good at communicating, and am especially good at grammar, punctuation, etc. as well as reading comprehension.

SAT Math

I have tutored the Math portion of the SAT for about 6 years now. I have had a lot of experience with this, showing students not only how to do problems, but time-saving ways of solving them. I've had good reviews on the SAT.

Trigonometry

I have tutored trigonometry for several years, and am familiar with trig functions, graphs, trig identities, etc.

Very Skilled and Patient Tutor

I was taking General Chemistry at TCC and was struggling until I met Roger. Roger is very skilled in breaking down chemistry materials/concepts that are easy to understand. He has a funny sense of humor too that makes being tutored by him enjoyable! I would definitely recommend anyone who is struggling with learning general chemistry to reach out and get the help they need from Roger.
