About Amanda

At the moment I am a substitute teacher for Virginia Beach city public schools. When I graduated from ODU I had the full intention of taking a little time off and then going to get my Masters, but then instead I had a baby and graduate school got put on the back burner. Meanwhile, I started subbing, and have come to the conclusion that I like to teach, and have since been juggling the idea of getting my teaching certificate to do so. I have at least a half a year to make up my mind, since my husband is a full time student and will graduate in December; and things are so much harder to do when you have a toddler. I hope by tutoring that I will gain even more experience with teaching and it will help me make up my mind on the matter.
When I teach and succeed in making an intellectual connection with another it makes me see why so many become teachers. Knowing that you not only help in improving a students mental quality, but also literally had a hand in said students future well being is more gratifying than teachers let on. The decision I have in front of me, whether to go back to school or to become a teacher, is going to be hard one.

Math was always the easiest subject for me; I had very strongly considered majoring in it, albeit biology persuaded me. I took classes as high as applied calculus (which I got an A in, and was by far my favorite math class), and I am confident that, although I did not major in math, I can proficiently help in the area of algebra.

I got my Bachelors in biology with my area of studies in animal biology; more specifically herpetology, ichthyology, entomology, and animal behaviors, along with all the require biology courses. I took several earth science classes, since it was so much fun (that is not an exaggeration). I kept all of my very detailed class notes from all of my biology, chemistry, earth sciences, and math classes, and have "studied" the, often.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
