Eastern Michigan University (Master's)
I am a recent graduate of Eastern Michigan University with a MS in Urban and Regional Planning, a Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems, and another certificate in Transportation Modeling. I have performed at the highest level in my studies and in my teaching. I taught Earth Science for Majors and Non-Majors, World Geography, Geography of Michigan, and Transportation Modeling all at the College level. In addition, I led workshops for middle school aged children in GIS Applications and Autocad. My student evaluations have been stellar over the years that I have taught.
I bring a wealth of knowledge to each and every teaching opportunity whether it is with my own children, in the classroom, on the job, or in a private tutoring session. I am definitely a lifetime learner and have a continued thirst for academics that I do not anticipate waning any time soon. My college career started back in 1980 as I embarked on a career as a Registered Dietician and after completing all of the course work in the field, I decided that I wanted to go in a different direction. After managing a variety of restaurant and retail establishments, I decided to pursue a more technical degree in Drafting and Design (I graduated in 2005 with a 4.0 avg.). The interest in the design field stemmed from my day job in construction. I have built homes from the ground up and enjoyed my years in the industry. Later in life, I decided that I needed to challenge myself again and began the pursuit of a MS in Urban and Regional Planning.
You may ask yourself, Why is he telling me all of this? My goal is to make you aware of the depth of knowledge that I bring to the table in many areas. One of the things that I learned during my college years is that many subjects overlapped each other and it became easier for me to understand critical issues with the wealth of experiences that I possessed. I absolutely love teaching and one of my greatest joys is witnessing the moment of understanding that coincides with the phrase, "Oh...I get it now." That it what I am aiming for and hopefully I will be able to share that with you.
I have taken just about every science course on the schedule over the years and understand the subject matter thoroughly. I took two years of AP Physics in High School and won the Physics award upon graduation with the highest overall average in the school. I completed all of the coursework for the BS degree in Dietetics along with an internship after my Junior year and I have kept myself informed over the years of the many changes in the field.
I traveled to Mexico on a mission trip in 2004 and had to communicate my construction knowledge to local workers in the building of a church there. It was difficult at first, but I was able to draw on my knowledge of the Spanish language and along with other verbal and nonverbal cues, we were able to advance the construction with few if and issues. Our family has hosted (5) international exchange students from different countries over the years with varying levels of English proficiencies. I tutored a girl from Venezuela in a more formal setting over the summer of 2013 and her test scores in English improved significantly when she returned to her school in the fall. We have hosted other students from Denmark, Brazil, Estonia, and are currently hosting a student from China.
The focus of my undergraduate and Masters degrees in the field along with the in-class teaching experience makes me uniquely qualified in this area.
I really do make learning fun and I strongly encourage you to contact me with any questions or concerns that you may have. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a native English speaker with a Master of Science degree. I have taught college students as an Instructor of world geography and earth science, and I have traveled outside the U.S. to collaborate on international projects. I've taught and tutored ESL as a volunteer, and as a host parent for students from: China, Estonia, Denmark, Brazil, and Venezuela.
Students I've tutored have gone on to gain admission to the colleges of their choice, and they have achieved high TOEFL scores.
I have an undergraduate degree with a concentration in Geography, and a Master of Science in Urban and Regional Planning with a Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems.
I have taught as a college Instructor, including courses on: World Geography, World Regions, GIS, and Geography of the Great Lakes.
My geography classes usually have general interest students in them who choose the class as an elective option. I've learned how to take large amounts of information and break it all down into manageable content for people new to the field. I specialize in fun and interactive learning, and in motivating students. I always hope to inspire a love of learning and to show students how to be organized and successful. Students have consistently given me outstanding evaluations of my teaching.
I've worked with special needs students and have been very helpful to those who struggle academically too.
I completed all coursework for a degree in Dietetics from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1985. I also completed an internship in the summer of 1984 at the Frick Community Hospital Dietary Department in Mount Pleasant Pennsylvania. I have managed or worked in a variety of restaurant and institutional food service organizations over the years and have followed new trends and guidelines over the years.
