About Eric

I am a PhD trained Chemist with experience in industry, government research and currently, college level chemistry teaching. I have been teaching chemistry since 2001 and have been fortunate to teach high school, undergraduate and graduate level chemistry to students of all ages. I have also been asked to tutor chemistry to students in middle school, high school (Honors and Advanced Placement), military personnel and college students. I can teach general chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry and biochemistry, which also covers my areas of academic preparation and professional working experience.

Regarding teaching / tutoring, I like to initially assess where students are deficient. Perhaps the student understands chemistry concepts but struggles to mathematically solve problems related to the concept. In this case, I will do some basic math refreshing to strengthen that area of deficiency and show how the math concept applies to the chemistry concept. It is possible that the student may be sound mathematically but lack clear understanding of the chemistry concept. In this case, I will review the concept by trying to relate the concepts to practical examples.

For example, the concept of limiting reagents in stoichiometry can be explained by using an example of making sandwiches. Let's assume that one desires to make a ham and cheese sandwich (product) that consist of two slices of bread, one slice of cheese, and one slice of ham. How many ham and cheese sandwiches can one make if 10 slices of bread, 7 slices of cheese and 6 slices of ham are provided? The answer is five, based on the amount of bread available when compared to cheese and ham. Realize that every sandwich must have two slices of bread. If 10 slices of bread are available, then only five sandwiches are possible according to the available resources. This example can explain the essence of a limiting reagent, because like the bread, the chemical reagent in a reaction that is low in comparison to the other reagents (i.e., cheese and ham) will dictate the amount of product (i.e., 5 sandwiches) a reaction can have. Thus, this illustrates how I try to find tangible / practical examples when explaining chemistry concepts.

Finally, I am passionate about chemistry and my goal is to dissolve the phobia that students have in this subject. I will attempt to increase their confidence and to communicate to them that chemistry is conquerable. It is my desire that they buy into this belief and begin to have some appreciation for the subject. After all, students will perform much better in any class that they have at least an appreciation for learning in. In most cases, if they have confidence that they can learn, they can perform well in any subject.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
