As a historian, I look back to understand the present. This process informs not only my academic work, but my professional life as well. I am currently looking to communicate my passion for history and writing to others through tutoring. It is not just historians who require collaboration to cultivate knowledge, but all of us! I hope to help others develop a life-long love of learning through collaborative learning and personalized guidance in the subject of English, History and Writing. I work mostly with high school students, but am comfortable working with adults and younger children (ages 5-14) as well.
My own educational philosophy centers on the development of life-long love of learning through engagement and cooperation. My interest in cooperative learning led me to attend St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland where I studied philosophy, music, language, and the history of science and mathematics in the context of a Great Books curriculum. I experienced the essential principles of teaching and learning—collaboration and mutual understanding—at St. John’s. In small classes where our professors were called “tutors” to emphasize their role as mentor rather than expert, my classmates and I discussed Plato, Newton, Kant and Einstein. Together with our tutors, we students worked together to understand these texts through classroom discussion. This alternative style of learning inspired me to share my love of learning with others.
This summer I will complete an intensive, one-year Master of Arts program at the University of Chicago. In this program I am studying American history, with a focus on southern history. My current research explores how Atlantans have memorialized the Civil War through the Atlanta Cyclorama. My research on memory connects directly with my educational philosophy—that learning about history involves learning about how we all, not just historians, have created our present world through the group process of memorialization. This process speaks to the value of community in inspiring others’ intellectual curiosity and encouraging open inquiry and I am particularly committed to this value as a tutor. I have a 11-year-old fifth grader boy who needs some help on writing. After just a handful of classes, I can see his interest and confidence in writing has increased. Elsabe has been very creative and engaging - seems to be a natural in working with kids. I enjoy reading the work that she has helped my son to create each session. It is a just a joy to read.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
