Hello! I am Kate and I am currently a medical student at UVA. I graduated from Wesleyan University this past year with a double major in Chemistry and Neuroscience. During my years at school, I learned how to effectively integrate and retain information by following my tried and true study strategies. However, I also recognize that learning varies greatly from person to person. I am prepared to commit to my students, not only sharing what works for me, but also helping them discover what methods work best for them. My lessons will begin with an introductory meeting so I can get to know you and understand how you learn best. From there, I will develop lesson plans and practice materials to fit your needs.

I worked as a teaching assistant for organic chemistry and biochemistry courses at my university. In this position, I helped the instructor write and edit problem sets and subsequently guided a group of 15 students through these materials. Students often reached out to me when they need extra assistance, and I was always happy to meet with them individually to go over specific questions. Science is about critical thinking and questioning, and I can help you develop the mindset you need to succeed in this subject.

I took the MCAT in January 2020 after a 5 week-long period of dedicated time. I scored in the 100th percentile, and simply put, I believe everyone has the ability to receive a good score on this exam without spending thousands of dollars on prep materials. Scoring well on standardized tests is a skill that I have honed, and I do not believe it is always aligned with doing well in class. I can share what helped me get better at taking tests and offer more effective strategies for your study plans.

Ultimately, I am working for my students, and my goal is to serve them to the best of my ability. As I am relatively new to this job, I am open to feedback and will work with you so you can always feel comfortable with my service. Please contact me if you are interested in setting up a lesson!

Biology,

Biology

I briefly worked as a teaching assistant and private tutor for my university's introductory biology course. Having taken the course the year before, I met with students individually to look over their notes and help them address specific points of confusion. We then created focused review plans for the student complete before the next session. I am also a neuroscience major, so I do have more extensive knowledge on neurobiology in particular.
Chemistry

Chemistry

While in high school I tutored fellow students in general chemistry, helping them greatly improve their grades and their understanding of the material. I am also a chemistry major, so I have extensive experience with college chemistry courses, ranging from general chem to biochemistry. I am well versed in most popular applications used for molecular visualization, so I could also assist you with troubleshooting if necessary.

I recently worked as a teaching assistant for biochemistry at my university after taking the class last year. I worked with the professor to write and edit test questions, so I can offer curated practice and review materials. I also led a small discussion section to address student questions and answers specifically. Because I am a chemistry major, I specialize in enzymatic mechanisms, as opposed to other subtopics such as genetics. I understand that biochemistry courses range in coverage and depth at different universities, and I will work with you to create an individualized plan that works with your specific course syllabus.

Organic Chemistry

I recently graduated with a degree in Chemistry from Wesleyan University. While there I was a teaching assistant for organic chemistry for 2 years and I also tutored students on my own time as well. My students rated my teaching style as beneficial to their learning, and I have seen marked improvement for the students I met with more often.

I took the exam in January 2020 and I scored a 524 (100th percentile). My subsection scores were each 131. I self-guided my own studying, and I plan to assist other students in creating a plan for themselves.

Well prepared and helpful

My goddaughter needed help with chemistry fundamentals and had a one-hour videoconferencing lesson with Kate. She told me later that the lesson was definitely helpful.

Concise & Professional

Tutor Kate taught me Organic Chemistry 2. For the sessions I was able to have with her, she did visuals in her explanation and spoke in a clear manner. She also was accommodating to time changes if you were able to request for time in a timely manner. Overall, she provided a secure and professional learning environment.

Awesome tutor

We went over the mechanism for Fischer esterification and addition elimination reactions before my quiz. Kate was super helpful and I liked that she was able to follow my professor’s notes (and she gave me tips she had learned). She was really patient and kind when explaining and you could tell she really knew her stuff! If you’re taking orgo 2, I recommend you give her a chance before some of theses other tutors who haven’t engaged with orgo for a while. You can tell Kate still remembers everything like it was yesterday. Wish I went to her earlier.

Helpful

We reviewed MCAT passages together which I found to be very helpfuL. She is well versed in spotting the traps AAMC sets up in their question stems and answer choices.

Excellent!!!

The tutoring is for my son, but he has told me several times that Kate is great. He has said that she explains the concepts clearly, and goes over any reviews step by step. We highly recommend her for anyone looking for tutoring in chemistry.
