About Lucy

I am a recent University of Virginia graduate, completing my degrees in Anthropology and Global Development Studies with distinction. While there, I also completed extensive public health research and had the opportunity to present my work at conferences along the East Coast. A few years down the road, I hope to enter a joint JD/PhD program and pursue my dream of becoming a disability rights lawyer. For the time being, I tutor and work part-time for a disability non-profit - all while writing a book on the side. My passion for education and academia, as well as my tutoring experience and skill, make me a great fit for your tutoring needs!

I believe in encouraging students to realize their own successes through supportive tutoring. By adding study skills into each lesson, I teach students how to tackle their coursework independently. I also like to find online supplements to materials students are introduced to in class. I'll fit these resources and my teaching methods to each individual student after conducting a learning style evaluation. Students are all different, so why should their instruction be homogenous? If this methodology sounds good to you, I would be happy to meet for an initial lesson to see if we could be a good match!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

I successfully completed the ACT and SAT to gain entrance to the University of Virginia. Once there, I completed two writing-intensive majors. This subject experience plus my years of tutoring experience make me uniquely qualified to help you succeed!

Anthropology

I graduated with a B.A. in anthropology from the University of Virginia in 2017. I had a 3.71 GPA and successfully completed my capstone project on disability and eugenics in Virginia as they influence contemporary policy.

Archaeology

As an undergraduate at the University of Virginia, I majored in Anthropology. Archaeology classes are available to anyone in the department; as such, I took full advantage of what the University had to offer! I also completed an excavation of a Roman-era villa outside Florence, Italy.

General Computer

I am an avid computer user. I utilize my laptop daily for both personal and professional tasks. My skills include, but are not limited to, emailing, web searching, academic research, Microsoft Office, and electronic medical records. I have experience teaching children and adults how to best utilize the technology available to them.

Macintosh

I have used Macintosh computers since 2010 for school, work, and entertainment. I love to embrace all of the many features they offer, frequently watching videos of new product developments to increase my knowledge. I believe that technology should work for you, and understanding how to harness it is the first step!

Painting

I watercolor paint regularly and run a popular Instagram page that portrays my work. I am in the process of setting up an online store to sell my artwork due to expressed interest.

Proofreading

Reading and writing have been lifelong passions of mine, leading me to pursue them further at the University of Virginia. To me, proofreading and helping students improve their work is incredibly fun. I enjoy combing through documents to craft the best product possible. I have performed paid proofreading work for some of my old UVA professors, looking over grant proposals and research papers prior to submission.

Public Speaking

During my undergraduate career at the University of Virginia, I successfully presented my research at three conferences. I articulately and artfully related my research to a variety of audiences. I can teach others how to tailor a speech to their audience, craft a riveting presentation, and heighten their public speaking success.

Sociology

I earned an interdisciplinary B.A. in Global Development Studies from the University of Virginia in 2017 with a 3.71 GPA. As part of my interdisciplinary curriculum, I took a variety of sociology classes to finish my degree. I have a deep understanding of sociological and anthropological theory.

Spanish

I have successfully tutored a range of Spanish students, from middle school to adult. I believe anyone can learn the language in the right setting! I myself have had ten years of instruction and keep up with the language regularly by reading in Spanish.

Writing

I have had a passion for writing since early high school, leading me to pursue it further at the University of Virginia. Once there, I completed two writing-intensive majors. This subject experience plus my years of tutoring experience make me uniquely qualified to help you succeed!
