About Laura

I received my PhD in twentieth-century American literature and am currently the postdoctoral fellow in Global Studies at the University of Virginia. While in graduate school, I read several personal statements for graduate and professional schools when I tutored at the writing center. In addition, I taught through the Summer Medical and Dental Exchange Program for two summers--my job was mostly to help students write their personal statements for medical and dental school, but I also provided some support for the reading comprehension section of the MCAT as well as the new essay section. The students in the program have traditionally been very successful, going on to medical school at Johns Hopkins, UVA, Harvard, UPenn, the University of Michigan, and other similar institutions. Finally, I've casually helped friends and family with their personal statements. They've also been very successful and have gotten into places like Princeton, Wharton, Columbia, SEIS, Georgetown, and so on. I have also taught college composition for 3 semesters.

High school and college students have reacted enthusiastically to the courses I teach because they say that I'm approachable and can make complicated information seem relevant and digestible. Further, I have been trained in a pedagogical program that insists that all students, with practice, can become effective writers and thinkers.

Please contact me to let me know how we might be able to work together to help you meet your intellectual and academic goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a PhD in English and can help with written and spoken English, as well as language lesson tailored to particular professional contexts.

Writing

I taught 4 semesters of accelerated academic writing; taught 1 semester of remedial writing.
