About Chip

I have a B.A. in both math and English from UVa, as well as an M.S. in Computer Science from UVa, and an M.Div. from Fuller Theological Seminary. I was a volunteer tutor for several years at Lake Region High School in Maine in math and English and also a substitute teacher for about 4 years. At the same time, I was a track coach at the school, so I have a ton of experience working with high school students. In 2010 I moved back to Charlottesville and worked for two different tutoring companies for about two years. I am semi-retired and look at tutoring as a great way to make a difference in the lives of young people.

I have successfully tutored elementary and high school students for over a decade, including SAT prep, English, and all mathematics. I have worked with both high-achievers and struggling students. My goal is not merely to help you get by, and to really improve your ability to really understand the material and think problems through. The thing I love most about tutoring is the one-on-one interaction. Learning stuff in a class of 30-40 students can be tough, but figuring out where you are stuck and getting you back on track is what makes me happiest as a tutor.

I once tutored an 3rd-grader who was having trouble reading. He hated school, because he knew he was a poor reader, and he knew he was falling behind. We did a very intensive phonics based training program. It was hard work! However, at the end of it, his mother said, "Here is the difference you have made. Now he loves to read! Every day he stands out at the bus stop reading a book. Every night I have to go into his room and say 'Please go to sleep! Turn out that light off now, and put the book away.' I cannot thank you enough." (Like I said, that was hard work! 120 hours of tutoring, but it paid off in a big way. I want to have that kind of impact on other students too--but hopefully it wont take 120 hours to get there!)

I worked my way through college as a math tutor. As far as math, I tell my students, "Let's draw a picture of the problem. IF you can draw a picture of it, you can figure it out." However, I was also an English major, and tutoring English is just a joy

My preference is to tutor in a public place. We live in a weird world, and it's best to make sure that everything is above board. (Plan B is to have an adult present for all tutoring sessions. I simply will not tutor a student in private. Online is okay too, but usually it's not the best way to go.)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have an M.Div from Fuller Theological Seminary and worked for 13 years as an assistant pastor or senior pastor. During that time, I preached almost every week and conducted Bible studies and led the church youth group. From an academic point of view, the best way to approach a Bible study is expository study--what is the meaning of the passage? From a spiritual point of view, the best way to approach a Bible study is more personal--where do you see yourself in this passage, and what is God calling you to do?

Literature

I have a B.A. in English lit. from UVa, as well as an M.Div from Fuller Theological Seminary. A lot of Western literature uses Biblical imagery. You don't have to *believe* the Bible to be good at English lit., but you need to know the major themes and symbols.
