About Shannon

I began tutoring in High School due to my quick grasp of academics and my love of teaching. I even filled in for the teachers at times! At Harvard, I both tutored fellow Harvard students and volunteer tutored at the local High School. I graduated magna cum laude in Physics, and was honored to join Phi Beta Kappa. I got my Master's in Physics from Boston University, then spent 20 years as an itinerant non-denominational Christian minister. I tutored informally throughout that time!

My tutoring has really blossomed the past year. I love tutoring physics, of course, and math, and have done extensive amounts of both ACT and SAT prep tutoring. I have even done some GRE prep tutoring. I love helping students to understand concepts: that is a unique and joyous experience! I have enjoyed tutoring college and high school, and have experience with both on-line and face-to-face tutoring. I have taught Physics classes to college and HS kids as an adjunct professor in Ohio, before moving to Oregon.

I not only understand math, I know how to communicate about it to those who are struggling. Too many bright people are not able to tell when students are not getting things, but I put forth great effort to make sure that my students are following me. Tutoring is not about hearing my own voice: it is helping others to come to understand--and love!--learning as much as I do!

I have both a Master's and a Bachelors in Physics, and while in Ohio was an Adjunct Physics Professor. I did teach, both college and High School, but most of my time was spent tutoring Physics students. Physics is a truly wonderful subject, and I mourn how many bad physics teachers there are. I try to do my part to help students grasp more about this wonderful subject!

I love the rapport I build with my students. I have tutored and taught physics, and math from pre-Algebra through Calculus III. I have extensive test prep tutoring experience, and have even tutored subjects like Engineering which I never have taken. If I have a textbook, I can learn and teach! Please contact me: I am available for both local (Portland, OR area) or on-line tutoring, with experience in both.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

Tutored ACT Math extensively for the past year. BA & MA in Physics. I have helped many ACT students understand the math they need, regardless of their background.

ACT Science

I have a Master's in Physics from Boston University, and a Bachelor's in Physics from Harvard, magna cum laude & Phi Beta Kappa.

Algebra 1

Algebra is an incredibly powerful tool that finds many many applications. I not only have the math skills, but also the interpersonal and communication skills to connect with virtually any student and help him or her to succeed in this very rewarding and useful subject!

Algebra 2

I have a master's in Physics, and experience tutoring.

Calculus

I have experience tutoring Calculus, both in person and on-line. I have a Master's in Physics, and love math!

Differential Equations

I took Differential Equations in college, and used the material while pursuing my Masters in Physics. I tutored Calc 3, which was primarily Differential Equations, this past semester with a University of Akron student.

Geometry

I can help with proofs, with coordinate geometry, with plane or solid figures. I love interacting with students and helping them get past their fears of geometry!

Linear Algebra

I took this material in college and I used it while studying Physics. I have just finished tutoring a University of Akron student in Calc 3, which goes into the beginnings of Linear Algebra. We used concepts like eigenvectors when I was in school.

Physics

Master's in Physics, Bachelor's in Physics.

Prealgebra

I have helped many with pre-algebra, and it is with pride that I think of one pre-algebra student whose mom told me that she began to not only do well in, but to like math as I tutored her!!

Precalculus

I have a Master's in Physics, and have both used and tutored math extensively.

SAT Math

I have experience tutoring SAT math both for the new and the old test. I have a Master's in Physics, and the communication skills necessary to help any level student do better at SAT math.

Trigonometry

Doing Trig Identities is a special love of mine! I think in the Unit Circle, though can certainly think in triangles for trig, as well. I have a Master's in Physics and lots of tutoring experience!!

Excellent tutor, very professional — Shannon has been a phenomenal find for my daughter who is struggling in college Astronomy. He responded promptly to my request regarding availability and two days later met with her a few days before her test. She's a lot more confident in the subject now thanks to Shannon, and she continues to use his services. I recommend him highly. ...
