About Avery

I have been tutoring high school to college-level STEM subjects for the past few years now, and over that time, I have successfully taught a range of students with different backgrounds and goals. I recognize that each student is unique and pride myself on catering to all of my students' individual needs and preferences.

To give you a little background, I started off double majoring in computer science and applied math at the College of William & Mary. During my free time, I would volunteer as a tutor for public schools in Williamsburg, VA, and eventually, I was hired as a tutor for the College of William and Mary. Later on, I became fascinated with computer engineering concepts, which led me to transfer to the University of Virginia. Currently, I am a senior studying computer engineering at the University of Virginia.

As an engineering undergraduate, I know how math and science subjects build on themselves, so it's important to me that my students truly grasp their material. Because of that, I try to make that material as relatable as possible.

Some subjects that I'm proficient in are calculus, differential equations, probability, physics, and a variety of programming languages and concepts.

I believe that learning math and science can be very rewarding, and I will work very hard to help my students succeed. My hours and availability are generally pretty flexible, so please feel free to contact me about appointments outside of my listed time ranges.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have a few years of experience tutoring math to students of all levels. I started out volunteering as a tutor for middle school and high school students, and since then, I have continued to tutor these subjects and more. As a computer engineering student, I use algebra on a regular basis, to the point that it is second nature.

Algebra 2

Algebra is a fundamental skill for me, as I use it on a daily basis for computer engineer problems and programming. I have tutored algebra many times in the past to middle school and high school students. This has kept my algebraic skills sharp and enhanced my mastery over the subject.

C

C has been an integral part of my education as a computer engineering student. I have worked on many projects both academically and independently using C, including: data structures, debugging, inline assembly, optimization, memory control. Furthermore, I also use C often for embedded programming. I am very comfortable with this language and my ability to explain it to others.

C#

I am very familiar with C#, as I have tutored in the programming language for the past two years. I have industry experience developing full stack for a .NET team. Experience I have in C# includes front end development (dashboards, exceptions reporting), MVC, and Entity Framework (integrating multiple databases).

C++

C++ has been an integral part of my education as a computer engineering student. I have worked on many projects and problems, both academically and independently, using C, including: data structures, debugging, inline assembly, optimization, memory control. Furthermore, I have experience tutoring C++ at my university.

Calculus

I am currently studying computer engineering at the University of Virginia, and I have completed all of the general math and science requirements, including calculus. Since then, I have had regular practice with calculus because I have tutored the subject for the past two years.

CSS

I have worked in web development for the past couple of years, and CSS is a fundamental skill for this field. I have used it along with Bootstrap to develop the front end of many web applications. After working with it extensively, I am confident in my ability to teach it to others.

Differential Equations

I have taken several courses in differential equations (ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations) at the College of William & Mary. Using MATLAB and R, I have also modelled and researched differential equations. In terms of work experience, I tutored a variety of students in differential equations at the College of William & Mary. The students I tutored were from a wide range of backgrounds, including premed, liberal arts, and applied sciences.

Geometry

Geometry is a fundamental skill for me, as I use it on a regular basis in solving engineering problems. I have tutored geometry many times in the past to middle school and high school students. Doing so has allowed me to keep my geometry skills sharp and enhance my mastery over the subject.

HTML

I have worked in web development for the past couple of years, and HTML is a fundamental skill for this field. I have used it to setup the structure of webpages, collect form data, and more. After working with it extensively, I am confident in my ability to teach it to others.

JavaScript

I have worked in web development for the past couple of years, and JavaScript is a fundamental skill for this field. I have used it along with many JavaScript libraries, such as JQuery, DataTables, and Highcharts, to develop things from graphing tools to interactive dashboards. After working with it extensively, I am confident in my ability to teach it to others.

JQuery

I have worked in web development for the past couple of years, and JQuery is a fundamental skill for this field. I have used it to consolidate code and develop things from graphing tools to interactive dashboards. After working with it extensively, I am confident in my ability to teach it to others.

Linear Algebra

I have taken applied and theoretical courses in linear algebra, covering matrix theory, projection, and vector spaces. In terms of working experience, I tutored linear algebra for a year at the College of William & Mary. I worked with both students who were interested in the proofs and theory of linear algebra and students who were interested in the applications of linear algebra in engineering practices.

Physics

I am currently studying computer engineering at the University of Virginia, and I have completed all of the general math and science requirements, including physics. Since then, I have had regular practice with physics because I have tutored the subject for the past two years. Students that I have tutored in physics range from premed students to engineering students.

Prealgebra

The concepts in prealgebra are essential in many higher level math concepts that I use on a regular basis. I have also tutored prealgebra many times in the past to middle school and high school students. As such, I am extremely confident in my prealgebra skills and teaching ability.

Precalculus

The concepts in precalculus are essential in many higher level math concepts that I use on a regular basis. I have also tutored precalculus many times in the past to middle school and high school students. As such, I am extremely confident in my precalculus skills and teaching ability.

Probability

I am currently studying computer engineering at the University of Virginia, and I have completed all of the general math and science requirements, including probability. Since then, I have had regular practice with probability because I have tutored the subject for the past two years.

Python

I am very familiar with Python, as I have tutored in the programming language for the past two years. In addition, I have taken several courses in Python. Some of the projects I have done, both academically and independently, involve recreating Python data structures, solving puzzles, and optimizing performance.

Very Helpful

Avery has been very helpful with improving my confidence in my Applied Calc I course. He's very patient and explains the material fully, but will then give me the opportunity to work though the problems and figure out my own mistakes rather than just tell me the answers. He clearly has a good grasp on the material and it shows in his ability to simplify complicated concepts and give examples to m
