About Elanna

I am a recent graduate of Mount Holyoke College, where I was a double major in Astronomy and English.

Through the Astronomy department, I worked as a tutor and ran weekly homework help sessions for an introductory level class. I like to use all available aids to help students understand concepts, including pictures, diagrams, graphs, animated simulations, videos, games, demonstrations, and analogies. For example, I might use a slinky to demonstrate a wave or turn in a circle to demonstrate the orbit and rotation of the moon around the Earth. I have found that it is very important to ensure the student is comfortable with the founding material before trying to explain the more complicated upper levels. I believe a thorough understanding of concepts creates a more effective learning process.

For my Astronomy major I took classes in various related sciences, including Physics and geography, and in math, mainly calculus.

As an English major I learned from one-on-one conversations with my professors in office hours how to effectively communicate and inspire reading and writing skills, and helped my friends work through ideas to formulate arguments for their papers. This process usually consists of asking leading questions that help the students focus their ideas. Further, my friends often turned to me to edit their papers or other written work.

I studied mostly medieval literature for my major, but I also branched out into Victorian literature and Modern Poetry, but the reading and writing skills I learned can be applied to any kind of literature.

In all of my tutoring I try to inspire confidence and engagement in my students.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Literature

English major at Mount Holyoke College, class of 2013 (recent graduate). Excellent reading and writing skills, if I do say so myself. In college (and high school) I never received below an A- in any English class.
