About Carolyn

For the past 14 years, I have been involved in education as a teacher, tutor, and student. After teaching in the public schools, I came to Charlottesville to earn my PhD in education in 2004. I fell in love with the area and have been here ever since! After I graduated from the University of Virginia, I worked at an educational non-profit to help create an elementary reading program. I have also taught reading to K-5 students and English as a second language.

I have worked with varying aged students on all subjects, including English as a second language, language arts, social studies, writing, organizational and study skills, and elementary math. I love figuring out what motivates a student and helping them to set and achieve their goals. Students I've worked with have become better organized, more confident in their abilities, and more successful in their classes.

I can work with students one-on-one, in a small group setting, or even hold small group classes. I also work with parents so they can help their children at home.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I studied the anthropology of education at the University of Virginia. My coursework included many anthropology classes, including reading and evaluating the seminal works in anthropology. My dissertation was from an anthropological viewpoint and used anthropology research methods. I've taught a class explaining how anthropology can be used in studying child development and education.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified to teacher K-5 in Virginia. I hold a M.A in education, a M.S in curriculum and instruction, and a Ph.D in education. I have tutored K-5 students, and currently teach ESOL part-time at an elementary school.

ESL/ESOL

I have my Virginia teaching license in English as a Second Language.

Phonics

I have worked as a full-time employee and consultant for the Core Knowledge Foundation, an educational non-profit that creates curriculum. I have worked on helping create a reading program that uses phonics and read-alouds. I have also taught reading to K-5 students using phonics.

Social Studies

I hold a K-5 teaching certification in Virginia, which includes social studies. I also taught social studies to 7th graders. The reading program I helped to create integrates social studies with stories.

Study Skills

I have worked with students as a tutor for study and organizational skills. I help students learn explicit strategies for note taking and test taking. I practice these skills with students in small, manageable chunks of time.
