University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA
I graduated from the Holton-Arms School, one of the best private high schools in the country, with honors. I now attend the University of Virginia, named 25th in the nation in US News' top colleges list. I highly value education. I also pride myself on working well with children, aspiring to be a clinical child psychologist. However, I have experience working with adults as well. Within the past year I have tutored recently immigrated doctors and middle school children in English as a Second Language (ESL). I have also tutored middle school children in basic math, history, and science. My methods are to be as patient and honest as possible.
I focus on pronunciation and vocabulary during ESL, speaking casually to demonstrate openness and invite usage of useful, everyday vocabulary. I offer knowledge in other areas such as SAT math, Microsoft Word, Spanish, and ballet. I scored 750 out of 800 on SAT math. I've been using Microsoft Word for 10 years. I have been learning Spanish for 11 years, exempting me from the language requirement at the University of Virginia and enabling me to converse with native speakers. Finally, I have been training in technical forms of dance for 14 years. I have participated in many competitions nationwide and been hired in several professional shows. Brianna is doing a wonderful job tutoring my less-than-enthusiastic 15 year old. She is patient with him and very professional. My son was slated to work with her in Geometry and Chemistry, but with his PSAT's coming up in October, Brianna is doing PSAT/SAT tutoring with him as well. An unexpected, but wonderful bonus to our tutoring sessions.
I have 2 16-year old granddaughters who have just completed their second session with Brianna B. They have had tutors before but not at all enthusiastic about them. However with Brianna B. it is different. My impression of Brianna is that she is a very smart, nice and professional young lady. She gets right down to business, no wasting time. When I ask the girls how their session went, they both respond "fantastic!". I am very pleased.
My daughter (going to the 10th grade) had her first Algebra and Spanish tutoring session with Brianna on 6/18. It was very important for me and my daughter to have someone she is very comfortable with and patient. It's hard for me to give a fair rating of 5 stars because this was only the first session and I have not had a chance to see progress yet. Some of that time was spent assessing my daughters areas of strengths and weaknesses. I am confident that Brianna and my daughter will have a great working relationship and my daughter will be prepared for her advanced Algebra and Spanish class in the fall.
I contacted Brianna B due to my son's urgent need to improve his SAT MATH score. Although, Brianna B was away at college, she accommodated my request for virtual tutoring thru Skype. Brianna B responded to all of my email inquiries promptly. On the first day of tutoring, Brianna B was prompt, prepared and professional. The basic skills test she conducted with my son, helped him realize his strengths and weakenesses with math.
Unfortunately, my son has elected not to take the SAT test again; therefore, our sessions with Brianna B have ended. I highly recommend Brianna B as a tutor; I will seek her assistance again if my son requires additional help during his freshman year of college.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
