About Dr. Margaret

My teaching philosophy is framed around the concept of my role as 'communication coach,' so one-on-one tutoring is a natural fit. I have coached/tutored many people--before, during, and after they were my classroom students. It is a tremendous joy to me when former students contact me and share their speaking or writing successes for other classes or at their workplaces or even job interviews. I judge high school and college level tournaments for prepared and impromptu speeches as well as dramatic literature performances. At the high school level, I served as an assistant forensics coach. I also teach writing skills! Writing is a permanent form of communication, so it is critical to express oneself clearly and to demonstrate a mastery of American English.

Uh-oh, sounds scary? It won't be. Hey, you can do this! No one is too nervous or shy for me.

All three of my degrees are a combination of speech communication and dramatic performance. I graduated summa cum laude at all three levels. I specialize in public speaking, non-verbal communication (body language), and performance (acting.) As a college student myself, I won debating and acting scholarships and awards and national performance nominations. I studied acting with Sanford Meisner. I was selected to be a teaching mentor for new teachers while in graduate school and more recently served as an advisor in a teaching excellence program. My love of teaching has always been part of who I am.

My goal is to build on your oral and/or written communication skills and witness your confidence grow. I also teach ASL, the beautiful visual language. No matter the subject, I am approachable, calm, and encouraging. I have worked with students who began with high anxiety levels as well as students who just needed organization and a push. When I tutor you, there may be homework assignments after every session (not overwhelming) and parents will receive periodic progress reports. I can travel to student's area and my hourly fee is $50. My schedule is generally flexible 10a-9p most days of the week.

I am excited to join Wyzant. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Grammar

Oral communication is temporal. By that I mean it is 'in the moment' and then it's gone. Written communication is permanent. People can reach for our document at anytime and reread it.

Please remember, when we sign our name to our written document, we are saying, "This is who I am. This is how I organize my thoughts and demonstrate my mastery of American English." Typos, poor grammar and unorganized thinking are not characteristics of a document we want to sign our name to, right?

My doctorate is in communication. Many people think this means oral only (speeches, interpersonal, essays on a variety of subjects related to communication, nonverbal, etc). Writing is also communication. I have taught over one thousand students in my career and With any of the thousands of students I have taught over no matter what the communication course may have been, we worked on written communication.

Grammar is one of the cornerstones of good writing. Sometimes we need to start with the basics and review or learn for the first time! It's an investment in oneself that lasts a lifetime.

I would love to help your writing reflect an excellence that will impress whoever is doing the reading!

Public Speaking

I've been teaching public speaking as a communication professor for a number of years, starting in 1993. I've taught at both universities and community colleges. My higher ed students ranged in age from 16 to about 65. Judging at local, regional, and semi-final forensic competitions for high school aged children as well as the college level.

Sign Language

My 1st husband (1980s) is deaf and I was learning ASL when we met. (class was at No. VA Comm College in Sterling, VA) I was immersed in the deaf culture in the Washington DC area for 5 years.

While working as a travel agent at AAA National Headquarters (when it was located in Falls Church, VA) I was the agent for deaf clients. I've taught children in small groups and one-on-one tutoring. I've also taught adults. It's a beautiful language!

Theatre

My background of professional training with Sanford Meisner in NYC and many college productions is the foundation of my qualifications. I've directed productions, scene work, and monologue performances as well. I coached high school aged students in my role as assistant forensics coach at a local high school.
