About Paul

I have more than ten years of experience in writing and tutoring students in a variety of subjects. As a high school student, I tutored other students in pre-algebra and algebra and most frequently in French. I also helped fellow classmates with Biology homework. From a very young age, I have had a passion for education and have wanted to be a teacher at various grade levels. In my experience as a tutor, I have always believed that it is important to break down large concepts into smaller pieces so that students can develop for themselves a greater understanding of the larger concepts. This works particularly well for math and foreign languages but can be applied to any subject and works best in one-on-one and small group tutoring sessions. I also emphasize the great value in repetition, which has helped me retain much of what I learned in my French classes more than ten years ago!

I carried with me my passion for educating others as I entered college and had a particular interest in teaching Biology. I received my BS in Biology in 2008 and spent one semester away from school to volunteer with a Catholic men's group dedicated to youth ministry. I returned to the same college as a graduate student in Spring 2008, studying Health Promotion Management. I learned the skills necessary to help individuals and communities adopt healthier lifestyles. Thanks to the knowledge I gained as a college student, I have a good working understanding of the concepts in the basic science courses taught to middle and high school students. In graduate school, I learned important educational concepts that can help people adopt and maintain healthier lifestyles. I can use these same concepts to help students increase their understanding of the various subjects they are learning in school. As a Catholic college graduate and youth ministry volunteer, I also carry with me strong faith values that have inspired my desire to mentor young people.

In addition to educating and mentoring youth, I have a great passion for writing. As a college and graduate student, I wrote and edited a variety of marketing materials for the University Campus Ministry department. I also wrote reflection pieces for their Sunday on-campus services and short biographical pieces on a number of Catholic saints. I have written a few blogs in the past and have helped write/edit blog posts for other blogs. While in graduate school I served on a church health ministry board and contributed health information literature to its monthly bulletin boards. I also gave a presentation on "Stress and Spirituality." Finally, I served as a graduate intern for the Dean of the School of Health Professions, writing marketing materials and providing support for a nurse-managed health program at a nearby Church. I always look for ways to improve my writing and I will use the knowledge I have gained over the years as a student and writing volunteer to help students develop a greater appreciation for the writing process.

I am joining the Wyzant community to continue following my passion for education and my love of mentoring others. I hope that I can demonstrate the fun of learning and help you develop and strengthen new skills that will help you as you continue your journey through this life. Please do not hesitate to contact me so we can get to work and discover the excitement that the academic world has waiting for us! While I have a flexible schedule, I am unable to drive and would need to restrict our sessions to online only unless you can get transportation to my apartment building. I have a twenty-four-hour notice for cancellations that is flexible as long as you are able to notify me at least a few hours in advance. I look forward to helping you develop your curiosity for learning about the world around us!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
