About Trina

I have always enjoyed working with youth and I love the personal challenge of learning about each students’ needs, strengths, and interests to help guide them on the path to academic success. I grew up in southern Virginia and graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.A. in Psychology and Political Philosophy, Policy, and Law. In college, I discovered my passion for education through volunteering with programs like Jumpstart, Center for Talented Youth, and Breakthrough Collaborative. After college, I served as a City Year AmeriCorps member and ran the Young Heroes Program, a Saturday service-learning program for middle school students in the D.C. metro area.

I then went on to teach middle school math for four wonderful years at Cesar Chavez Public Charter School for Public Policy in Washington, DC. My students grew an average of 3.8 years on their math MAP assessment. In addition, I coached the girls soccer team and mentored new teachers as Urban Teachers’s Host Teacher and as Breakthrough Collaborative’s Instructional Coach. While teaching, I earned my dual Masters in General Education and Special Education from Lesley University. I currently have teaching certifications in Middle School Math (4th-8th grades) and Special Education (K-12th grades). While tutoring, I will also be working on my Master of Social Work and training new teachers in DC.

My effectiveness as a teacher lies in my ability to build relationships with each of my students. I strongly believe in teaching the whole-child and I am skilled not just at getting students to understand math conceptually but also helping students build the confidence to succeed. In my math classroom, I strove to make the learning as individualized as possible for each of my students and I look forward to continuing this work as a tutor.

I have an extensive experience with Common Core math standards from teaching in DC when the Common Core was implemented. I also wrote the 6th grade math curriculum for my school using the Common Core standards and my Master of Education degree incorporated much of the skills and knowledge needed to teach Common Core.

I look forward to working with you so that together, we can figure out what style and techniques work best for you. I have seen amazing growth with all my students and I am confident that you can find success as well through our time together.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
