About Stephen

I've taken school seriously all my life, from elementary school all the way through college, and understand well both the joys, and the frustrations, of learning. I also enjoy being able help facilitate the learning process for others through teaching and tutoring. Rather than spoonfeeding information and answers, I prefer to act more as a facilitator, guiding the student to discover and learn for themselves, as well as make connections between the things they learn. I value my students and see each of them as gifted in their own way, as I recognize the importance of a tutor also being an encourager.

Regarding my Japanese experience, I've been studying Japanese myself for over eleven years, having studied abroad in Japan for one of those years, and having worked there as an English teacher for two. Understanding the Japanese language, people, and culture is my passion.

Regarding my ESL experience, I finished the undergraduate equivalent of a graduate certificate in TESL, tutored ESL on the side for a year, and worked for two years as an English teacher in Japan, teaching elementary school students, middle school students, as well as adults.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Japanese

Have been studying Japanese since 2005, having taken classes in high school, college, studied abroad in Japan, and lived and worked in Japan for two years. I have passed the N2 level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, which means I know about 1000 Kanji, in addition to Hiragana and Katakana, and can speak Japanese fluently and understand some business Japanese.

Though I am not a native speaker, I have studied really hard to reach where I am, and I know well the struggles of the Japanese language learner, and I have a passion for the subject and for learning it.
