BS-Campbell University (mathematics)
Mathematical thinking is an order of operations. Many find the concept to be difficult. The fact is that you already perform an order of operations everyday. You put your socks on before you put on your shoes. You apply toothpaste before you brush your teeth. Many put cereal in a bowl before they add the milk. Thus, you think mathematically everyday and success is easily within your grasp.
What are your hobbies and interests? I like to apply a mathematical concept to things that interest the student. Not only does this help with material retention, but it also fosters interest and makes learning more fun. I use step-by-step instruction with many examples and ,then, let the student work a similar problem. "Practice makes perfect" is a good prescription for success. I use real world applications to further show validity of the material. It answers the question of "when will I ever use this stuff?"
I also let the student make up a problem involving the concept introduced to test understanding and to show readiness after the tutoring. It's a personalized assessment of the student's understanding of the material. I typically use some humor in the tutoring process to ease nerves and put the student at ease. I entertain any questions or concerns the student may have.
I have 16 years of teaching experience and have taught subjects from Math 7 to advanced math. I am also well versed in the use of the Texas Instruments graphing calculators TI83 and TI84. I can program them as well. I am familiar with numerous math sites on the Internet which can be used as additional resources. I also instruct test taking strategies to enhance performance on multiple choice tests such as SOL's.
My goal is the student's success and the enjoyment of mathematics. Mathematical thinking is an order of operations. Many find the concept to be difficult. The fact is that you already perform an order of operations everyday. You put your socks on before you put on your shoes. You apply toothpaste before you brush your teeth. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
