My teaching style is cooperative and participatory whether they are adults, teenagers or younger children. I assume my students are self-motivated to learn, improve and have fun! I use traditional classroom methods as well as visual and auditory re-enforcement, real life examples and the occasional field trip. I teach all levels of students and specifically instruct Geometry, Algebra (Pre too!), Government (Social Studies), Writing, and Science - Physical, Life, Earth Sciences. Many of my students are ELL as well so we incorporate learning English as part of the main subject.

I am a U.S. Citizen born in Virginia yet have lived all over the country and traveled worldwide. I spent the 2014-2015 school year in the Middle East at an American Special Education school. I am a mother of two daughters that have been educated in the PWC school district. In addition, I have a child on an IEP for a learning disability. I have been a Girl Scout Leader and volunteer for over 5 years. Also, I volunteer as a CASA or Court Appointed Special Advocate for Abused and Neglected Children (thus I have been background checked by court system).

I am located in the Northern Virginia - Manassas region yet teach in Stafford County.

My undergraduate degree is from Penn State. My first Master's Degree is from Hawaii Pacific University in business and my second Master's degree is from Regent University in Special Education (Learning Disabilities, Autism, Emotional Disabilities). I am also certified to teach ESOL students.

Please contact me and let me know how I can help you improve your knowledge and skills.

TOEFL,

TOEFL

The TOEFL iBT test measures your ability to use and understand English at the university level. And it evaluates how well you combine your listening, reading, speaking and writing skills to perform academic tasks. It was developed to address the problem on ensuring English language proficiency for non-native speakers wishing to study at American universities. It has become an admission requirement for non-native English speakers at many English-speaking colleges and universities. Additionally, institutions such as government agencies, licensing bodies, businesses, or scholarship programs may require this test. A TOEFL score is valid for two years and then will no longer be officially reported since a candidate's language proficiency could have significantly changed since the date of the test. Colleges and universities usually consider only the most recent TOEFL score.
Writing

Writing

As a double liberal arts major (BA and MA), the one thing I have learned to do well is to write. As a business professional for over 20 years the ability to put words together has served me very well within the military, the government, companies and now in schools. My ESOL students benefit from my vast writing experience including academic papers, business white papers and editorial responses. I am very detail oriented and specific when it comes to writing instruction. How can I help you?

History

American History,

American History

I currently co-teach American History. My original degree is Political Science. Basically...I LOVE this stuff! The Virgina SOL standard questions require students to extrapolate information before being able to answer the question in front of them. Hence some students need help with re-enforcement of information from class as well as test taking hints to do well on class assessments AND the SOL. And it is my job to fill in those blanks!
Geography,

Geography

Geography is much easier to understand when you have traveled the world. As a avid traveler world wide I can help bring this subject alive for you. That way you can make real world associations with what you are learning in class and then translate them onto your assessments.
Government & Politics,

Government & Politics

As a Political Science major I studied all ares of the social sciences. Government, politics and civics studies make up some of the areas of the political science. If you are a middle school or high school student in Virgina then you are required to pass classroom assessments and the SOL. Those tests need you to extrapolate information prior to choosing a final answer. I can help ensure you know the background information as well as the question information. If you are a college student I can help you fill in the blanks where the professor might not have been absolutely clear. Plus assist with correctly writing answers how college professors want to see them in those little blue books.
Social Studies

Social Studies

I have an undergraduate degree in Political Science and a minor in National Security issues. This adds a social studies, government and history (7-12) content endorsement to my teaching license.

Special Needs

I am a Special Education Teacher for 7th and 8th graders (yet have taught 9th to 12th grades as well). I work in a self contained classroom including Austic as well as Aspergers students. My classes include all types of Learning Disabled students (ADHD, ADD, Vision Processing, Cognative Processing) as well as Emotionally Disturbed students. I hold a Provisional Special Education License from Commonwealth of Virginia as well as Master's Degree work in Special Education.
Special Needs

Special Needs

I am Special Education teacher in Northern Virginia. I have taught high school and am set to teach middle school (8th grade) this fall. I specifically deal with learning disabled students. To help them discover how they learn and to teach them HOW to learn for themselves. I understand accommodation however not exception. LD students need to know "normal" and not have everything excused for them. I am able to give special attention to those with vision processing issues such as my daughter.

Great understanding of 2e/ADHD

Kristen is working once a week with my son on executive functioning skills. He is a sophomore at TJHSST, so we needed to find someone to help him develop a system for staying getting and staying organized, and for staying on top of bigger, longer term projects, which Kristen has done. She is helping him learn the organizational and study skills he will need for college and beyond. It was challenging to find someone who understood the speed, pressure and intensity of TJ, plus 2e/ADHD issues, but Kristen does. Kristen arrived the first day with a bag of supplies from a Staples, and has helped him turn chaos into into order. Every week, they go over the papers he got back, look at long term assignments and break them down into smaller parts, set mini due dates, and file the paperwork somewhere **he*** can find them. And strongly encourages him to use his assignment book. She also insists he reads the rubric. This is really important because he was getting low grades for doing projects the way he wanted to, and not how the teacher wants them done. Kristen also insists my son builds in fun with friends and other downtime into his schedule. I love that he is learning to create work-life balance.

Excellent

Kristen is acting as an ESOL teacher for my 12 year old daughter. I know she’s tired after a full day of 7th graders but she arrives with energy and a knack for for getting our shy daughter to speak. Highly recommend

First review for this tutor - will follow through with another.

I liked that she gave me references and they were excellent. I enjoy her experience with special needs and challenges my daughter to excel. She doesn't take any flack from her and she respects and does the work she asks. Soon, I hope, she will do the work for herself.

The best decision of our children's education!

My daughter struggles with ADHD; a complicating issue when it comes to schoolwork and organizing. Nonetheless, after this school year, my daughter is heading into the 8th grade having gone from failing grades in Math, English, and Science to achieving an above average report card with a couple of A's, several B's, and only a couple of C's. We are thrilled as parents to see how well she has benefited from Kristen's tutoring. As a plus, we decided to get our other child included into the tutoring sessions, and he also struggles with ADHD. His organization skills were a mess and he was failing badly in 8th grade Algebra I. He now has excelled so much since the tutoring started, he is heading into the 9th grade this year and being placed in "Advanced Placement" courses. Every single course is AP, with exception to extra-curricular. We can't thank Kristen enough for making a miraculous difference in our children's education.
