Emory & Henry College (Master's)
I have been tutoring for over 18 years, working with kids from preschool up through 12th grade through Washington County VA schools and private tutoring. I also trained parents to tutor children in a community program that I started. I have a daughter with several disabilities, so working with kids with disabilities has always been one of my favorite things to do.
I didn't pursue teaching until most of my six children were grown, so this is something that I really have a calling for. One of my best experiences came from a young gentleman that I tutored for a number of years. He had been kicked out of school. I realized that he, like so many other of my students, were fantastic kids who were simply covering up for not being able to read. That's why I went on to get my Master's in Reading
I absolutely love reading, and writing. As a published author, instilling the joy that comes from reading and understanding what is read is what I live for.
The thrill of watching a student finally figure out a math problem using manipulatives like cereal, grains of rice, or blocks cannot be matched. Science is a step into discovery...what we knew becomes something that determines what we will learn. The greatest thing is that reading, science, and math are all interrelated, and when taught that way, students can see how this knowledge that they are acquiring is really helpful to them.
I have a Master's in Reading. In fact I passed my certification for being a Reading Specialist, but since I have not been a classroom teacher for the required amount of time, Virginia did not certify me as such.
Please contact me. I can come to your home, or we can meet in the library or wherever else you wish. This is going to be fun! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a current Virginia teaching license for the teaching of grades Preschool through 8th grade. I have taught a few months each in preschool and 4/5 English classes. I have been tutoring reading for over 18 years.
I had a 4.0 average in my Master's Reading program, which had a very heavy emphasis on the teaching of phonics. I have used phonics with all of my private students and with many of my students from Washington County Schools.
