Bio

I have been passionate about teaching all of my life. I started tutoring math at my local Boys and Girls Club more than 8 years ago as a high school student. Now, as a 3rd year Civil Engineering Ph.D. student at Virginia Tech, I still dedicate some of my free time to tutoring students in Math, Civil Engineering, and Career Development.

Now, as a 3rd year Civil Engineering Ph.D. student at Virginia Tech, I still dedicate some of my free time to tutoring students in Math, Civil Engineering, and Career Development.

The math courses that I have in-depth experience tutoring are algebra 1, algebra 2, pre-calculus, AP calculus AB/BC, and college-level calculus 1 & 2. Math has always been my favorite subject, so I love to work with students as they complete homework problem sets and prepare for upcoming tests. At my undergraduate institution, Clemson University, I worked with my engineering department as a tutor for calculus and civil engineering statics & dynamics. As a mentor, I have mentored over 20 students in the past six years and have gained valuable experience navigating the professional world. I would love to offer help with resumes, cover letters, and interview prep for a job.

My dream job is to become a professor, and that is why I love tutoring students. As a tutor, I have always believed in listening to students' needs and challenging them to truly understand the material. I believe my job as a tutor is not to simply give out the "right" answers, but to educate and empower students with the confidence to be successful scholars moving forward.

Career Development

As a mentor, I have had the ability to help many students develop resumes and cover letters in preparation for career fairs and applying for jobs/internships. I have given many mock interviews to assist students in obtaining their first internship or job. As a Ph.D. student, I have conducted many interviews with undergraduate students, which makes me a great resource for anyone needing advice with a resume, cover letter, or interview.

Very enthusiastic and passionate

James helps guide me through concepts I don't fully understand during class in an amazingly understandable manner, which allows me to take the skills I struggle to understand in the classroom and transform them into something I can digest.

Knowledgeable

James went over statics with me a concept that I struggled with understanding. He explained the whys and made sure that I understood the concept and not regurgitating what was said. As we went through some problems he gave me simple ways to solve what seem to me to be complex problems. If you are not sure of the whys as you work through problems he takes the time to go over those small details and bring you up to speed. I would recommend him to anyone that needs help bringing concepts together. Thanks again.

One of the best tutors I had encountered!

I was recently struggling in an accelerated Calculus 1 class this past summer semester and was really lost on many concepts that were taught. Although I had used many class resources that were given to us, I was still unable to understand the topics. After one session with James, I was not only able to better my understanding of Calculus, I was also able to increase my test average within one week from my first exam and gained confidence within myself to finish out the class strong. James has been nothing but patient, understanding, and very relatable with me during my tutoring sessions. He was able to guide me back on the right track in such a short time span. I’m very grateful that I came across him on this website.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor.

James helped me with statics. Specifically resultants of nonconcurrent force systems. He explained everything very well and helped guide me through the problem. He really made me feel more confident with finding resultants.

Sharp and Adaptable Tutor with Charisma

James taught me about engineering statics and subsections within it. I enjoyed his tutoring method the entire time! I could not stop smiling because of the amount of fun I had working these difficult problems. I was a tutor myself all through high school and was so impressed by his level of care that I would highly recommend James to any individual looking for a upbeat, positive, and patient tutor. I did not know much going into the tutoring session but I left with confidence and a desire to practice problems on my own! Thanks James!

Knowledgable and patient Tudor.

When James didn't know exactly how Zach was being taught the subject matter or what the teacher was asking for, he was quick to figure it out. He also explained thing in a way Zach could understand.

James B. Calculus I Tutor for my Grandson who is taking an excellerated Summer Course at his College in Washington DC - He is majoring in Computer Engineering at the start of the Fall Semester

James B. was on time and able to quickly understand and acclimate to my Grandson's need and assist him in catching up as my Grandson due to unforeseen circumstances started the class late. My Grandson is a 1st time College student beginning with a summer class and has only taken Pre-Calculus. My grandson thought James was great and on point and is looking forward to have another session with James to further solidify his grasp of the foundations to be able to achieve mastery on his own . James also recommended my Grandson take the time to practice extra problem set in preparation for his test. James B. is a keeper. We are grateful for his professional service and expertise.
