About Alicia

Hi guys! I am a college student studying animal science. I love being outdoors, playing and coaching soccer, Brazilian jiu jitsu, and cooking. I have experience tutoring students in elementary, middle, and high school and I absolutely love tutoring because I love to spread the knowledge that I have to others and it's extremely rewarding to watch the people you've helped succeed.
My favorite saying is "where there's a will, there's a way." That's because I believe that with a strong desire to succeed, anything is possible. If you want to improve, you will. I will do my very best to help you achieve what you want to achieve and I will be more than happy to do it.
My tutoring method varies some depending on the subject, but the overreaching concept remains the same. I believe that the best way to learn is to do. In math, soccer, and Spanish, repetition is key. Practicing the concepts and working toward understanding them is of the utmost importance.
I have experience tutoring high school students in Algebra I and Geometry with great success. I was a strong math student in high school and in my freshman year of college, I received a departmental physics award for my performance in calculus-based physics (no, I am not a physics major). I love teaching math because I love helping people to make sense of something abstract.
I have 5 years of Spanish experience. I am very close to fluent and I recently gained experience as an (informal) medical translator. Last year, I was responsible for the home school Spanish education of a middle school student. I had a great time preparing lessons and watching her learn. I am also pursuing a minor in Spanish in college.
I began playing soccer when I was 5 years old and I recently ended my career after playing for a season at a division III college. I know about the game, strength and conditioning for it, and the college recruitment process. I have experience coaching players between ages 9 and 13. I love the game with all of my heart. I follow FC Barcelona and I believe strongly in their style of play.
I have taken general chemistry in both high school and college and received an A in both. I view it as being very math and physics based. I hosted study groups for my class mates and was able to re-explain the concepts in a way that more of them could understand.
I'm excited to meet and work with you!

Sincerely,
Alicia

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have taken math through Calculus I and received A's in all of my math classes. I have experience tutoring a 10th grader in this subject with very good success (she went from and F to a C and passed her standardized test.)

Chemistry

I have taken general chemistry in high school and college and received an A in both classes. My experience tutoring students currently only includes friends who I have helped with homework and lab reports. However, I feel very confident in my abilities to help others understand chemistry.

Soccer

I have played soccer since age 5. I played recreational soccer, as well as four years of travel experience and two more years of high-level travel experience. I played one semester for a division III college. I also have experience coaching U10-U14 players (boys and girls). I also currently hold my F license to coach.

Spanish

I have studied Spanish for 6 years total. Four of those years were in high school and two more in college. I have experience acting as an informal medical translator and as the only provider of a Spanish education to a middle school student who was home schooled. My method is to teach from the ground up. I like to provide the student initially with some key phrases so that they can communicate at a very basic level and then build on the vocabulary and grammar beginning with the present tense and progressing through more complex tenses and grammar points.

Study Skills

I am a sophomore in college and I currently have a 4.0 and I ended high school with a 4.6 out of 4.3 (we have added weight for more difficult classes at my school). I have been successful in studying myself and helping others in my classes to improve their study skills. While I have no formal experience teaching study skills as a whole, I have worked with several classmates to help them find ways of studying and organizing themselves to best meet their goals.
