About Paige

I first began my teaching career when I was 18 years old. I volunteered at many public elementary schools and found my love of teaching working one on one with students. Helping my students find their individual path for learning is my passion.

I began specializing in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) in Madrid, Spain where I worked as a tutor for students ages 3-45. While working abroad, I became fluent in Spanish, which has made me sympathetic to the language learning process that my students go through. When I returned to the USA, I earned my Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction and ESL Education at Virginia Tech.

For adults, I specialize in tutoring for the TOEFL exam, grammar and writing instruction, pronunciation and accent reduction, and reading. Because I have so much experience teaching many types of people, I can make my lessons specific to your purposes-whether that is for business, engineering, corporate, or just conversational English.

For ages 5- 12th grade, I have developed interactive an fun lessons that can help them interact better in English with their teachers and peers in school. I also teach reading, writing, math, social studies, Spanish, and science to native English speakers which improves SOL test scores in public school. My expertise is not only in ESL education, but also academic writing. I improve your writing by editing editing papers, or reading and studying skills.

Master's in Curriculum and Instruction- English as a Second Language and Multicultural Education
3 years experience teaching public speaking, presentations, and writing at the Virginia Tech Language and Culture Institute, a school for academic purposes.

I have formally studied Spanish for 12 years in the classroom and became fluent in the language while living in Madrid, Spain for 3 years.

One of my goals is to help you be successful in your endeavors. I want to challenge you without overwhelming you. I conduct periodic assessments to track your progress.

Generally I am available from 9am-9pm every day, including weekends. I look forward to working with you and helping you succeed in your studies!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I first began my undergraduate career with the intention of becoming an elementary school teacher, so I majored in Interdisciplinary Studies to prepare for that. In the program I minored in General Science and General History Education, took courses in Children's Literature, and took 12 credits of basic math. I have all the skills to teach various contents. I also teach ESL where I teach through content and help k-12 students in their classes and I have also earned my Virginia state teaching license for k-12 ESL education.

ESL/ESOL

I have my CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults), a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction- English as a Second Language and Multicultural Education, and a Postgraduate Professional License to teach English as a Second Language - PREK-12 in the state of Virginia. I have six years of ESL teaching experience.

IELTS

I teach in an English for academic purposes program at Virginia Tech that has students take this test before they begin classes and then they finish a level to measure their progress. I proctor this test regularly and also help to score the test. I have also tutored the students in my program for this test.

SAT Writing

I have a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction- English as a Second Language. I teach courses in writing essays and research papers from beginning levels to the most advanced in an Intensive English Program for academic purposes at Virginia Tech Language and Culture Institute, where I prepare students for university and for their entry exams. In addition, I have taken and passed the SAT.

SOL

I have volunteered in public schools, was a student teacher, and worked in public schools in Virginia that administer SOL tests. I have helped students from grades 3-12 prepare for these tests while working in the schools. I have prepared students for the tests, administered and proctored SOL tests.

TOEFL

I teach in an English for academic purposes program at Virginia Tech that has students take the TOEFL test in order to get into Virginia Tech. I have proctored this test three times, taken the test myself, and have taught it in an elective class. I have also tutored two students in my program for the TOEFL outside of class.
