About Rachel

I am a fluent speaker of Spanish and English, with a passion for learning languages. I enjoy nothing more than being able to teach people to speak and read a language. Language is communication, yet it is also so much more than this and being able to speak several languages is a gift that can vastly change your world and the way you perceive it! There is no fixed method to learning a language. Linguists and learning theorists alike have delved into the problem of how to learn language and have yet to come to a reasonable conclusion on how it can be done. My personal belief is that each student will have his or her own method to learning and should learn through a variety of methods: reading, listening, speaking, writing, observing, etc. It is my pleasure to teach and help others with their pursuit of language.

I graduated from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota in May of 2011 with a Bachelor of Art’s degree in Spanish and History. I concentrated primarily in Castilian Spanish (the Spanish spoken in Spain) and modern European History and spent seven months abroad in Seville, Spain. In addition, I am currently obtaining my certification in teaching English as a foreign language.

Aside from my education, I’ve worked as a Spanish tutor for 3 years and I’ve worked in the library as a computer instructor and as a library assistant. My future hopes are to teach foreign languages to children and adults in addition to obtaining a Master’s degree in Linguistics.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

I was a history major in college and concentrated in European history. During my studies, I took several courses on the art and culture of ancient Greece and imperial Rome from the time of Augustus Caesar to emperor Nero. I also studied Western literature from that period and am familiar with Herodotus, Thucydides, Plato, Aristotle, Sophocles' plays, Cicero and his orations, Livy, and Suetonius. I took a short course on the Roman statues.

Macintosh

I've owned a Macintosh computer for five years, and used it often working as a Professor's Assistant in college. I am fluent in using a variety of programs specific to Macintosh computers such as iPhoto, iMovie, iCal, and Garage Band. I am also knowledgeable in organizing folders with Macintosh computers and have experience using the Macintosh versions of Microsoft Office.

Microsoft Windows

For a year, I worked as a Computer Literacy Instructor and Assistant. I taught basic computer skills on how to run a Windows computer and how to use Microsoft Office to adults from a wide range of economic and social backgrounds. I also assisted patrons at various public libraries having difficulty using the computer. In every job I've had thus far, I've used both Windows and Macintosh computers and consider myself adept at using them for a wide range of purposes.

Spanish

I've studied the Spanish language since the sixth grade. In high school, I was one of sixty students to be selected for a state-wide summer immersion camp. My passion for language continued into college I graduated with a bachelor's degree in 2011 from St. Olaf College in Spanish and History. I spent part of my college years abroad in Seville, Spain. I've also used Spanish in several work environments. In the summer of 2010, I interned in a library branch specifically to make the library a welcoming environment to Hispanic patrons. In addition, I have three years experience tutoring Spanish and helping children, teenagers, and adults learn the language.
