About Cynthia

I can help you learn biology and math. My teaching experience has mostly been at the college level teaching at 2 year, 4 year and post graduate institutions. I have also been a substitute teacher in high school and elementary schools as well as home schooled children with special needs or who were suspended.

My focus in biology is ecology, entomology and evolution; however, I also have a strong background in mathematics.

My teaching style can include lecture; however, I prefer to engage the student. I listen well to determine weaknesses in understanding concepts so that I can focus on that concept. I do not need to teach the whole course to provide understanding.

I can also teach scientific term paper writing including APA style in text and resource page citations, as well as proofreading skills.

I have helped my students on many occasions with organizational skills and study and test taking skills.

I am also qualified to teach the younger set. I have raised 4 children and was an active participant in all school and extracurricular activities. I have baked a lot of cupcakes! All are off to college or have graduated and I have 2 delightful grandsons ages 6 & 8. I enjoy a good (or cute) joke and interact well with children. I am also fine with pets, any pet.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Science

I have received training for the ACT and SAT standardized college entrance exams and I use the College board text book for tutoring the SAT exam. I also tutor math and science for the Virginia math and biology SOL. I prepared students from the 4th grade math through algebra II to take the Virginia math SOL. I can help your son or daughter as well.

Algebra 1

I have taught at the college level for the last 15 years and tutored from 4th grade elementary math through college calculus. I have helped prepared many students in taking their SOL for graduation, ACT math and science preparation and SAT math preparation. I can help your son or daughter as well.

Algebra 2

I have tutored middle school math and science through college level precalculus and biology.

Biology

I am a Professor of Pathobiology. I have been teaching biology over 15 years at the college level and often tutor biology to high school students on the side. All I need is old tests, quizzes and homework assignments to clarify concepts missed in class. For help understanding current concepts, I ask to see the text book or worksheets to maintain continuity with the teacher.

Botany

I have completed several undergraduate level courses in botany including general botany, plant physiology, plant morphology, identification and mounting and preserving of specimens. I keep plants as pets and often bring them to class to demonstrate morphology. I have also conducted experiments (mostly with my children) on plant physiology. Understanding plants is a major concept in General Biology 102 in the Virginia Community College System learning objectives.

Ecology

My major in college was biology with a focus on ecology and evolution. My minor was is mathematics. I have been teaching biology on the college level for 15 years and tutoring mathematics on all levels including college calculus.

I am also highly organized with the use of lists, calendars and agendas. I raised 4 children so I understand developmental milestones. I can teach any core subject on the elementary level. I can also teach study skills.

Elementary Math

I have tutored many students from elementary math through college pre-calculus as well as SAT and ACT math and science test preparation.

Genetics

I have completed several undergraduate level courses that have a genetic component including Genetics, Evolution, General Biology 101 and 102. I am well versed in Mendel and his experiments with pea plants and rosters. I understand and have also taught the Punnett Square and Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium Principle. Understanding basic genetics is a major concept in General Biology 101 which I regularly teach in the Virginia Community College System learning objectives

Very helpful and very kind

My son is struggling with Trig. Cynthia was very understanding, helpful, and kind. I really like how she wanted us to connect her with the classroom teacher so that they could work in tandem. My son is still struggling, but rather than being in a state of despair, he is working his way toward hopeful.
