My main dialect is Central American-- specifically the Spanish spoken in Costa Rica, but I have friends from many Latin American countries and experience tutoring students desiring Spain Spanish as well as for trips to Colombia, Peru, or for general Spanish knowledge and fluency.

My tutoring philosophy is that one will learn more by having fun, so I propose a dynamic course using real-world examples and experiences to cement vocabulary and grammar. I love to teach, and I am very patient. Spanish is a very important language for use in personal and professional life, both here and abroad. Let me be your -- or your child's-- stepping stone to an appreciation of and eventual fluency in the Spanish language. I am very invested in my students' progress for every level of their Spanish learning adventures.

Spanish

Spanish is my favorite subject to teach because it is such a poetic language. I have been tutoring for about a year, and I have also been professionally translating it for area non-profits and other companies since before graduating from UVA 3 years ago. While at UVA, I received a B.A. in Spanish and loved every minute of it. I have spent significant time abroad and the language is one about which I am passionate. If I don't have your student loving Spanish and speaking it well at the end of his/her sessions with me, then I haven't met my goal for your student. Languages are the perfect mix of a fun and practical thing to dedicate one's time to, and they can improve English vocabulary as well. They make us more careful in our speech, and more expressive. Learning other languages can help us to understand other cultures and other ways of thinking. I want to help your student learn to speak, read, and write, but also to think like a native Spanish speaker.

Elementary Math

Math concepts didn't always come easily to me as a child, but I always worked at them until I understood them. Once I did, I loved explaining the concepts to the other students who were lost. The teacher or the textbook often only have one way of explaining a subject, and that particular way might seem like a foreign language, even to a bright student. Let me be your interpreter, and explain it to you or your student in a way that they understand. Once they understand, they can really own their math skills and math can become fun again!

Great lesson!

My kids enjoyed today's lesson very much. Instead of just telling the words, Ms. Elizabeth used food objects and menu to teach them how to order and say food names in proper manners. She is also very willing to answer questions and make sure they understand. My kids are looking forward to the next lesson.

Very flexible and patient

My son started with Spanish lessons with Elizabeth. He was very frustrated in school with his Spanish teacher's inability to teach Spanish. Since his instructions (only 4 so far) he already feels ahead of the game in class and gained his self confidence. Now we switched to English instructions with Elizabeth, which already made some impact on my son even after one session. Elizabeth is very flexible with the scheduling, always smiling and has a very positive attitude.

Late for first lesson , then cancelled on us

We met with her to introduce our son. When our son became ill and required Urgent Care, we cancelled with as much notice as possible, but her e-mail made it clear she was quite annoyed. When we were finally able to schedule another session with her, she was late for that session. We had a death in the family and after returning from that, I tried to set up another session and was informed she had relocated. Although she did offer that we could drive to her home to continue (30 miles). She never indicated this was possible and imminent. We would not have started with her if we knew she wasn't permanent in Ellicott City. This has left us in a terrible position in trying to get the quality tutoring my son needs right now! We are most disappointed with this tutor. Also, our son indicated to us that she taught what she thought was relevant and did not really try to figure out what he needed to complement school work. He is in a dire situation - not due to her - but our solution is gone and we are scrambling to help him. Frustrated and disappointed.

Tutor responded:

I was not late for your first lesson, but rather 15 minutes early. I met your son and we spent half an hour discussing with your son what he would like for our lessons to look like. He said that his conjugation skills were good, but that he wanted to get better with vocabulary. Your second lesson was scheduled at the Miller Library in Ellicott City and you cancelled with two hours notice because your son was sick, something that you said that you knew about that morning, but that you didn't cancel the lesson until two hours before our lesson start time. You said that you were hoping that he would get better, which I understood. I did not charge you a cancellation fee because it was an emergency and because you likely didn't know my cancellation policy (it is listed on the website, but many miss it). I had waited at the library for much after the start time of your lesson before I learned of this cancellation, and that might explain some of the annoyance that I may have initially had in my first email asking where you were, but after learning why you cancelled, I understood and I wished for him to get better. We arranged another lesson not long after, and it went well. Your first paid lesson was at a library which was not open at the time that your wife wanted the meeting, so we both drove to the Barnes and Noble again and had the lesson there. We had one or two other lessons there on other weekends. There are no guarantees that a tutor will be available forever, although I am planning on living in the Rockville area for quite some time. There are also no guarantees that a tutor will be available on your preferred day, especially after a long gap in lessons and on short notice. I think it had been two weeks since you had contacted me for a lesson when you requested that I come the next day, a Sunday for another lesson. That is when I told you that I was not in the area, but that if you liked you could drive to Rockville and I would find time to tutor your son because you sounded a little desperate in your phone message. It is no longer my normal practice to plan weekend meetings (I now do it for first time students only or in emergency), but you sounded like it was important, so I informed you that you were welcome to drive down and I would help out your son, and that if you could give me a call to give me the details about the specifics that his teacher wanted me to work on with him, that I would do that. I never heard from you until this comment, and now I'm very sad that you didn't call me instead of getting upset and we could have gone over options for your son. I am sorry that you are frustrated and disappointed, but it sounds like you're really not so much frustrated at me as you are that your son was not able to communicate that the lessons that we had were not helping him in the new ways that he needed help. He indicated to you that the lessons were not helping him, but he never mentioned to me that this was the case. He always seemed pleased with our lessons while we had them and he continued to improve with each one in ways that he had indicated he would like to improve. I was monitoring his progress and in the areas that he wanted to improve, he was improving. As our meetings were only once a week for a while, it was not extreme progress, but it was as much as could be expected from an hour a week for a few Sundays. You said that your "solution is gone." I assume that you mean that I was your solution to your son's Spanish issues, which is very complimentary, so thank you. However, I am not the only way that he can receive help. There are many other willing and capable tutors through this website and others if he still needs help from a tutor. I never claimed to be permanent in Ellicott City, and I wish that I had known that you were looking for a tutor to stick around for more long term. I could have given you more notice that I was moving; it was not evident that you still desired tutoring services after a gap in requests for lessons as long as yours was. I hope that if you do need tutoring again, that you will either seek a tutor who is local to that area or that his teacher will be more available for him. Also know that I am still available for him although he is currently out of my driving range. If you ever need me to tutor him again, you need only drive down to see me, and please do give me more notice if you can in the future. Unfortunately, I don't charge enough to pay for the gas or to merit the time that it would take to drive to Ellicott City. Take good care, Elizabeth

It was a pleasure tutoring your son! He is hardworking and intelligent and I am so glad that he was able to tell me what he needed so that I could make sure to give him all the help that he needed! He was as energetic as me and kept up through all of our activities.

A well-organized tutor with clear goals for her student

Elizabeth is such a great Spanish tutor for my son. Before every lesson, she prepares her materials for the lesson, sets the lesson's goals and sees to it that my son reaches the goals. At the end of each lesson, she assigns my son homework to cement the teaching. She's very easy to be reached by email or by phone and she's flexible with the schedules. I'm thankful that my son has Elizabeth as his tutor.

Great Spanish Tutor

My son is in honors Spanish and really struggled. After one session with Elizabeth he has increased his confidence level and understanding. She gave him an assessment to pin point where she should focus her time. She gives multiple examples of an explanation to ensure my son completely understands the subject area. I really appreciate Elizabeth's teaching style and love her approach to understanding a foreign language. We will continue to use Elizabeth, she is a great tutor.
