University of Virginia (Spanish)
I have a B.A. in Spanish from the University of Virginia, and I have over six years of professional translation experience for non-profits and other companies. My main dialect is Central American-- specifically the Spanish spoken in Costa Rica, but I have friends from many Latin American countries and experience tutoring students desiring Spain Spanish as well as for trips to Colombia, Peru, or for general Spanish knowledge and fluency.
My tutoring philosophy is that one will learn more by having fun, so I propose a dynamic course using real-world examples and experiences to cement vocabulary and grammar. I love to teach, and I am very patient. Spanish is a very important language for use in personal and professional life, both here and abroad. Let me be your -- or your child's-- stepping stone to an appreciation of and eventual fluency in the Spanish language. I am very invested in my students' progress for every level of their Spanish learning adventures. Group lessons-- for any number greater than 1 student, the price goes up $5/hour per extra student. 2 students would be $55/hour, 3 students would be $60/hour, and so on.
Elizabeth has done a great job with my son and helping him with his Spanish speaking and language skills. Through her initial assessment, Elizabeth was able to target the key areas that my son needed to work on, and, with each lesson, drills down on these areas. She spends time when needed on areas that he needs continued support and when he understands a concept or skill, will move to the next area that he needs help with.
My kids enjoyed today's lesson very much. Instead of just telling the words, Ms. Elizabeth used food objects and menu to teach them how to order and say food names in proper manners. She is also very willing to answer questions and make sure they understand. My kids are looking forward to the next lesson.
I'm so glad they enjoyed and learned, too! I love helping students at every stage, including developing a love of Spanish when they're just starting out.
Elizabeth is patient enough and knowledgeable. she maintains timings very well.
she is very good in Spanish tutoring.
she has required qualification and education.
Elizabeth is a very knowledgeable tutor and i feel she will help me a lot in my upcoming work i am very grateful to have her and recommend her to anyone that needs help
My son started with Spanish lessons with Elizabeth. He was very frustrated in school with his Spanish teacher's inability to teach Spanish. Since his instructions (only 4 so far) he already feels ahead of the game in class and gained his self confidence. Now we switched to English instructions with Elizabeth, which already made some impact on my son even after one session.
Elizabeth is very flexible with the scheduling, always smiling and has a very positive attitude.
Elizabeth continues to be a pleasure to work with. She is always so positive and continues to make learning fun. We are learning so much from her. When we move to Costa Rica we will miss her.
Elizabeth was very effective in implementing what my 6th grader required and he had no trouble making up for lessons missed at school. She was very patient and kept him very engaged and interested in the tutoring sessions.
It was a pleasure tutoring your son! He is hardworking and intelligent and I am so glad that he was able to tell me what he needed so that I could make sure to give him all the help that he needed! He was as energetic as me and kept up through all of our activities.
Elizabeth is such a great Spanish tutor for my son. Before every lesson, she prepares her materials for the lesson, sets the lesson's goals and sees to it that my son reaches the goals. At the end of each lesson, she assigns my son homework to cement the teaching. She's very easy to be reached by email or by phone and she's flexible with the schedules. I'm thankful that my son has Elizabeth as his tutor.
My son is in honors Spanish and really struggled. After one session with Elizabeth he has increased his confidence level and understanding. She gave him an assessment to pin point where she should focus her time. She gives multiple examples of an explanation to ensure my son completely understands the subject area. I really appreciate Elizabeth's teaching style and love her approach to understanding a foreign language. We will continue to use Elizabeth, she is a great tutor.
I highly recommend Elizabeth as a tutor. She tutored my daughter in Spanish for about a month leading up to exams. She is very knowledgeable and professional. She comes to the session extremely well prepared, obviously spending her own time planning her lessons. She connected very well with my 16 year old daughter and uses a very positive approach to teaching.
Elizabeth went over and above what was expected. I intend to use her again.
My son really enjoyed his first lesson with Elizabeth and is looking forward to his next one. He felt like the one on one way of learning really helped clarify some things for him. Thanks Elizabeth!
Elizabeth is currently tutoring my three children in Spanish. She does a great job and uses an immersion technique. She is lively and does a great job!
My children (ages 9 and 12) and I have been working with Elizabeth for about 6 lessons so far. She is doing a great job at working with both children and adults, and researched to find a text that would work for all of us. Elizabeth always comes with a lesson prepared and tries to make it fun for the kids with games, visuals, etc. I like the way she speaks to us mostly in Spanish and uses gestures to help us understand. She is pleasant to work with and patient with the kids. We have a long way to go to be fluent, but hope to keep Elizabeth as a tutor for as long as we can!
Ms. Elizabeth is great teacher who is friendly and easy to work with. She tries to accommodate my son even with her busy schedule. I am very pleased with her teaching methods and my son seems to enjoy her class.
Elizabeth has been tutoring my son only a few times, and we have seen immediate improvement in his grades! He had a quiz last week and his score was much higher than any other score he has received.
Elizabeth has been great with my 15-year-old daughter, whose goal is to advance one level in Spanish before the beginning of her junior year in high school. After only one 2-hour session with Elizabeth, my daughter, who is already an A+ student, was feeling even more confident with her Spanish speaking skills in class. After meeting with my daughter at the initial half-hour consultation, Elizabeth was able to come up with a curriculum, and they were off and running! Thank you so much, Elizabeth!
She is a great and very knowledgeable person. I have learned a lot from her and highly recommend her as a tutor.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Math concepts didn't always come easily to me as a child, but I always worked at them until I understood them. Once I did, I loved explaining the concepts to the other students who were lost.
The teacher or the textbook often only have one way of explaining a subject, and that particular way might seem like a foreign language, even to a bright student. Let me be your interpreter, and explain it to you or your student in a way that they understand. Once they understand, they can really own their math skills and math can become fun again!
Spanish is my favorite subject to teach because it is such a poetic language. I have been tutoring for about a year, and I have also been professionally translating it for area non-profits and other companies since before graduating from UVA 3 years ago.
While at UVA, I received a B.A. in Spanish and loved every minute of it. I have spent significant time abroad and the language is one about which I am passionate. If I don't have your student loving Spanish and speaking it well at the end of his/her sessions with me, then I haven't met my goal for your student.
Languages are the perfect mix of a fun and practical thing to dedicate one's time to, and they can improve English vocabulary as well. They make us more careful in our speech, and more expressive. Learning other languages can help us to understand other cultures and other ways of thinking. I want to help your student learn to speak, read, and write, but also to think like a native Spanish speaker.
