George Washington University (Master's)
Hello! My name is Lisa and I am excited about the possibility of becoming your tutor! I graduated from the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor in 1996 with a BA in French. While an undergraduate, I studied at the Universite de Provence (France) for one year. I consider myself conversationally fluent in French. I hold a Master's degree in International Affairs from George Washington University. The focus of my degree is Education for Disadvantaged Youth.
Professional Background: After receiving my undergraduate degree, I worked as a French Translator and Project Manager for an engineering and construction firm. While in graduate school, I was a Staff Assistant for Media Relations for Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. I also worked as a website content developer and editor for The World Bank and developed the French version of their Adult Education web site. I currently work as contractor to the US Department of Labor with the country's largest training program for disadvantaged youth.
Tutoring Experience: I have served as tutor to numerous individuals, including children, young adults and adults. I have tutored in the following subject areas: French (grammar, reading, writing, conversational language acquisition, vocabulary, pronunciation), English (grammar, vocabulary, sentence construction, editing and proof reading), and GED preparation (primary English and US History). I have also served as a private swimming instructor and have coached a youth swim team.
Teaching Style: I am an extremely organized individual who comes to each tutoring session prepared with an outline of the session, written materials to use during the session and to practice content taught, and homework activities for the student to prepare prior to the next session. Every session begins with a review of the topics learned in the previous session and builds on these topics. I take my time with each student and do not move on to a new topic until I am certain he/she understands the previous concept. The sessions are fun! I like to get to know my students on a personal level and take pride in watching them succeed and grow.
I look forward to working with you and helping you to achieve your learning goals! Hello! My name is Lisa and I am excited about the possibility of becoming your tutor! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
