I was a software architect and engineer for more than 20 years. I used a wide variety of programming languages (C, C++, C#, Dart, Go, Pascal, Delphi, Java, Python, R, and many others). For one year, I did competitive programming at CodeEval and reached the top 1%. I currently act as the Chief Information Officer of the Museum of Science Fiction and I am a Senior Vice President at a Healthcare IT company.
I have a lot of experience with children. I developed educational software for mobile devices and taught chess at an elementary school for 2 years. I'm the Chair of the Board of Arlington Students Chess.
I'm a native Portuguese speaker (from Portugal) and I've been living in the US for the past 15 years. I'm very fluent in English, and conversational in French and Spanish. I have been working as an English to Portuguese technical translator for more than 25 years.
The content of my lessons, my rates and the pace at which I teach are tailored to each student. I employ a hands-on method where the student directly uses the tools he/she needs for learning. I complement the lessons with written materials and practice questions. If the student doesn't have his/her own computer, I will provide access to one during the lesson. At this time, due to COVID concerns, I only teach online.
