About Kara

Hi my name is Kara! I graduated magna cum laude from Brigham Young University in history teaching and a minor in music. I love both history and music and especially enjoy teaching young students on a one on one basis. I've taught middle school World and United States history and private music lessons. I love finding creative ways to help students connect with ideas and making concepts more applicable in their lives.

I have a year of experience as a certified history teacher teaching 6th grade World history, 7th grade Utah history, and 8th grade United States history. I have taught a wide age range of students as well as abilities and interests. I most enjoy teaching American history but am comfortable teaching general world history. I currently volunteer at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and studied abroad in college in London, UK. Topics of particular expertise include World War II, the Civil War, British Victorian era, and the Holocaust. Favorite individuals in history include Winston Churchill, William Wilburforce, Irena Sendler, the Wright Brothers, Abraham Lincoln, and Queen Victoria.

I began playing the violin at age four and the piano at seven. I was instructed in and am very familiar with the Suzuki Method but was not strictly taught in that approach. I love music and the endless opportunities it provides to try new skills, challenge our viewpoints, connect with others, and improve our concentration. Music is healing, enlightening, and transcending. I think everyone should at least TRY to learn a musical instrument at some point in their lives, particularly as a child.

I love teaching students and helping them catch the excitement of learning a new skill or a new concept. I'm anxious to help you grow in your studies or just improve a new hobby. Please don't hesitate to reach out and ask any questions you may have. I promise to respond promptly to your inquiries and schedule an online tutoring session soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I majored in history teaching at Brigham Young University and taught 8th grade United States History after graduating. I spent several units particularly teaching about slavery and the Civil War. I also wrote one of my final term papers about the role of women on the homefront during World War II, by examining how women were viewed and portrayed in advertisements at that time. I feel very well versed in American History.

Social Studies

I graduated in magna cum laude from Brigham Young University with a degree in history teaching. My teaching license was from the state of Utah and qualified me to teach any history class from 6th to 12th grade. My teaching license expired last year but since I'm a young mother and no longer live in Utah, it didn't make sense to renew my license.

Violin

I have taught private violin lessons for over a year. I minored in music at Brigham Young University and began playing the violin at age four and the piano at seven. I was instructed in and am very familiar with the Suzuki Method but was not strictly taught in that approach. I began playing in school and community orchestras at twelve and began accompanying on the piano at fifteen. I also have experience in various choral groups and collegiate choirs and took private piano and fiddling lessons while in college. I was also the first chair violinist in a non-audition orchestra at BYU. I love music and the endless opportunities it provides to try new skills, challenge our viewpoints, connect with others, and improve our concentration. Music is healing, enlightening, and transcending. I think everyone should at least TRY to learn a musical instrument at some point in their lives, particularly as a child.
