I hold a bachelor's degree in Mathematics from George Mason University, where I also completed 24 credits in a Master's program in Mathematics, where I focused on linear algebra and number theory. After 15 years working as a data analyst, I have returned to my roots and would like to share my love and respect for math. I believe that basic math skills are as important as any other subject and I want to help make math accessible and understandable, and perhaps even enjoyable.
I have been a site based math tutor for the past year and a half but am looking for more flexible tutoring options. As a lover of mathematics at its higher levels, I enjoy working with older students on challenging algebra and calculus concepts. As the father of a young daughter, I feel comfortable working with the youngest learners to help with counting, arithmetic and basic operations.
I can offer a great deal of flexibility. I can work with all sorts of learners: young children, middle schoolers, high schoolers, college students and continuing education students. I can help catch up on coursework, help improve grades or challenge students to get ahead. I can also help with test preparation. And I have a flexible schedule, with morning availability and evening availability, both on weekdays and weekends.
Nothing bothers me more than to hear a student say, "I'm bad at math." I do not let a student simply write off a large portion of their education simply because they have become disillusioned. I love math and mathematics education is my passion, and I would value the opportunity to help you or your child achieve your math-related goals. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
At university, I concentrated on algebraic topics. Linear algebra was one of my strongest subjects. As a graduate student, I taught a 200-level matrix algebra course in place of the graduate department chair, who was traveling overseas. My graduate thesis concerned a specific class of non-square matrices and the undirected graphs that they implied.
