About Heather

I have always known that I had a passion for literacy and education. I believe that all children have the ability to learn and achieve success and it is my responsibility to tailor instruction to meet diverse student needs.

I am presently in my fifth year of teaching elementary aged children. I have taught kindergarten, first, and second grades. Next school year I will be teaching third grade. Outside of the general education classroom, I have served as an after school tutor for 3 years working with children in grades 1 and 2. Because of my diverse professional experiences, I have a very well rounded picture of the essential skills and knowledge a young learner needs to be a successful reader and writer. I understand the importance of motivating students and designing engaging lessons and learning activities, while being aware of and responsive to a learner's changing needs.

In addition to my undergraduate degree in elementary education and graduate degree in literacy, I hold a reading specialist certification. As a lifelong learner myself, I continually engage in professional development inside and outside of my school to stay current on the trends and best practices in education. I enjoy tutoring because I get to work with learners on a more personal level. Tutoring allows me to really focus on the area(s) of need a student has and to provide specialized instruction to help that child experience success. I hope to help young learners develop a positive attitude toward learning and literacy while preparing them with the skills they need to be productive, contributing citizens. I firmly believe that children are the best investment in the future of our country, and I take great pride in being an educator who works well with students to help them reach their maximum potential.

I have undergraduate studies and degree in elementary education, Graduate studies and degree in literacy, Reading Specialist certification. I passed the Praxis Exam for Middle School English and Language Arts, participated in professional development on current trends and best practices in literacy instruction, taught English Language Arts only to two classes of second grade students where all students left my classroom performing on grade-level or above based on end of the year requirements, and have knowledge of a variety of assessments.

I am thrilled about the possibility of working with your young learner to enhance their toolbox of literacy skills and prepare them to be a successful reader and writer. My passion for learning and literacy is contagious and I hope to help foster a similar positive attitude toward literacy and learning with your child!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)
