About Nicole

Nicole received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and her master's degree in Urban Education from Temple University. She also holds a certificate in Afterschool Curriculum and Program Development and a certificate as an Independent Education Consultant from the University of California - Irvine Campus. In May, she became certified in Appreciative Advising which allows her to capitalize on her compassionate communication and coaching model of youth development and in August she partook in PENN’s Center For Equity Series on Higher ED and attended the National Equity Project's Coaching for Equity Institute.

She believes in treating each student as an individual and really listening to the student's likes, dislikes, and more importantly, PASSION! This process is a team effort and journey to find the right fit for you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

Nicole currently resides and works in DC as the Senior Program Officer, School Programs and the Director of the Summer Academic Enrichment Program for the College Success Foundation DC where she assists and supports families through the entire college selection and acceptance process. Nicole’s background is quite rich and varied and includes being the principal of the Philadelphia YouthBuild Public Charter School, assisting in the opening of and working as the acting principal and Director of Testing and Education at the bilingual LAYC YouthBuild Public Charter School, co-founder of the Teaching Excellence Center, former director for the Columbia North YMCA, served as the Director of Education at the first rape crisis center in the country, and worked with the Department of Probation and Parole supervising adult offenders.

She received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and her master’s degree in Urban Education from Temple University. She also holds a certificate in Afterschool Curriculum and Program Development and a certificate as an Independent Education Consultant from the University of California - Irvine Campus. Most recently, Ms. Smith co-authored a chapter in NACAC’s latest edition of its entitled, “If Not Us, Then Who?” where she wrote about supporting first generation students as well as students of color in the college access and success realm. She also developed an ELearning Module for NCAN entitled, “Cultural Competency “ and was also featured in the book, Why The Sun Rises”, a compilation of essays from women who make a difference in the educational field. Her next writing adventure includes writing a chapter entitled, “I Chose to Stay: Urban Love Letters from the 215 to the 202”, for Re-Authoring Savage Inequalities: Counter-Narratives of Striving and Success in Urban Education (2016-2017).
