Did you know that dolphins sleep with only half their brain? That opera singers get stage fright? I love science and teaching and think the best approach to improving at any skill is to get excited about it. I have a PhD in Behavioral Neuroscience and have been teaching middle/ high school and college for over 15 years, so I have both applied and theoretical experience in learning and motivation.
Need to give a powerpoint presentation? Do you want to bore and confuse your audience with slides filled with words that you read, or do you want to be as exciting as a Ted Talk? I take a special pride in saving the world from terrible presentations - let me help you find the best way to clearly present your message to an enthusiastic audience.
Science is a process and anyone can do it with a little guidance. It didn't come naturally to me - I had to struggle through at first, but I learned strategies that make science not just doable, but fun. My specialties in science are biology, psychology, neuroscience, ecology, evolution, marine biology, conservation, sustainability, physics, and acoustics.
I have to present all the time and use my theater and graphic arts experience to keep it engaging and educational. My colleagues come to me to edit their presentations and reports. I have had students in class who, when they saw the syllabus, said, "oh no, I can't give a presentation!" I've worked with them until they were comfortable, and they gave outstanding performances that got great feedback from the class.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
PhD in Neuroscience, MS in Marine Biology, BS in Biology
I was a Presidential Arts Scholar recipient for Cello performance at George Washington University, a competitive auditioned program. I have played cello internationally as a soloist and with chamber groups and orchestras. Groups include the Orchestra of Quintana Roo and Roumana (world music band). My cello students, who I have taught in person and online, have gone on to pursue successful cello careers including one who recently got a permanent position with a Mexican symphony orchestra.

As a frequent invited lecturer at international conferences, I use PowerPoint to give engaging, interactive presentations. I have taken graduate level courses in effective use of PowerPoint. I have helped hundreds of students develop slides that clarify and enhance their talk.
I have conducted Physics education research with a special focus on introductory physics education to non-majors. My current research is in the field of Biophysics.
My personal experience in public speaking includes frequent conference presentations, including keynote addresses to hundreds of people (e.g. International Association for the Study of Dreams 2015). I also regularly teach classes and workshops. I have specialized PhD level training in giving engaging PowerPoint presentations, and mentor people of all skill levels, from students paralyzed with stage fright and no experience, to colleagues who want me to help them refine their slides and delivery. My experience in theater also gives me some helpful tricks, because public speaking and theater have much in common.
My theater experience is diverse and movement focused. I have a special focus in fight choreography and performance, and have performed and choreographed for the Washington National Opera, I also have experience with object manipulation, puppetry and circus arts, and taught these skills at the Providence Circus School and at Zip Zap Circus. I also have a general theater background, and have training and experience for both live and film productions, and even musicals.
