About Nancy

I was a reading and writing specialist in Fairfax County in elementary and high school. After taking early retirement, I became certified in ESL and taught English as a Second Language at the U.S. Embassy School in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. This was an amazing experience from a teaching and cultural perspective. Having completed 12 credits of Spanish at American University did not enable me to arrive in Honduras capable of having a very long conversation with the people! The school was for K-12 grade, and the high school English teacher arrived after having spent two years in Caracas, Venezuela. Her Spanish was very good, and she helped all of us to improve our speaking.

Working in Germany in a preschool, on an army base, was another culture in almost every category. Again, having had two years of German in high school, plus one year of college, did not prepare me to converse in German. I was a curriculum specialist on the base and trained teacher.

The total number of students I've taught have lived in at least 54 countries representing Europe, Asia, South America and Africa. My tutoring of students in multicultural homes has exposed me to art, music, religion, food and many different philosophies of life. My career has been enriched by all of the above. My ESL teaching has included Marymount and Northern Virginia University.

My experience also includes a lot of students of all ages, and with many special education needs. Learning disabilities, emotional, and physical problems are on my list of home bound students. I worked part time in the home bound programs in both Fairfax County and Arlington County School systems.

If I were not a compassionate, dedicated and knowledgeable, teacher, I could not have had such a successful career. There are many excellent letters of praise in my filing cabinet to document this. My B.A. degree is from American University, and my M.Ed. degree is from University of Virginia. Eighteen graduate hours in writing theory and research were also earned from Northeastern University in Boston, Mass.

I look forward to working with WyzAnt to extend my career, and to continue helping children and teenagers.
