I have been teaching and tutoring for most of my life. I love my job teaching high school and middle school science and working one on one with motivated students of all ages to improve how they learn. I have successfully tutored a variety of subjects in a student-centered, time-efficient manner; I have successfully helped students raise their SAT and ACT scores for over a decade.
My students have described my teaching as personal, caring, and challenging. I pride myself on my ability to teach students how to get the job done on their own--that way, their success truly belongs to them.
Students I have taught and tutored can be found all over the country: working for the NIH, dancing at the Metropolitan Opera, and studying at rigorous institutions such as Harvard, UCLA, the Naval Academy, and Johns Hopkins Medical School.
A young medical school graduate, I decided to leave my primary care residency simply because I was not happy. I found my way into teaching after working one on one with students from competitive, independent schools in South Florida. After a successful and enjoyable 10 year teaching career in Miami, I moved to the DC area last summer to be closer to my friends and family. This past school year I had the pleasure of teaching 8th grade science. I am equally excited to be returning to teach high school science for the upcoming school year.
I look forward to working with you and your family to maximize your potential, improve your study and test-taking skills, and build your confidence as an independent learner. I am willing to discuss rate adjustments based on student and family needs. I have tutored small classes of students in the past and am willing to do this again.
Joel is very impressive all around! My son said he has learned a lot even after his first 2 hour session. He added that Joel was very patient and encouraging on concepts that he (my son) hadn't previously understood. I noticed my son seemed inspired and more motivated to study after his lesson with Joel.
Joel and my son worked well together for there first session.
Joel is very positive and encouraged my son to keep a positive attitude as well.
Joel gave great advice on how to organize and be the model student.
We look forward to another good session.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have have tutored, taught, and mentored numerous hyperactive and attention deficit students in the past 12 years. Many were clinically diagnosed and being medically treated and others were not. I worked one on one with some, tutoring them in subjects such as SAT prep, writing, and math. As a science teacher, I have taught scores of students with ADD/ADHD. I have learned how to help them improve their test taking skills and their study skills to be more effective, self-advocating learners.
I am in my 13th year of teaching, and this year is my eighth year teaching chemistry. Currently, I am teaching in Virginia; I taught chemistry (honors and regular) at a rigorous, independent school in Florida for six years. I enjoy working one-on-one with motivated students to help improve the way they study and understand chemistry.
I love teaching genetics--it is a fascinating area of study. It is a topic I taught my students for 10 years in both 9th grade biology and in AP Biology. I have seen students struggle with genetics and have worked successfully with them to improve their mastery of the subject. I have successfully prepared students to understand genetics to find success on both the SAT Subject Test in Biology and the AP Biology test. (In fact, my AP students had a 100% pass rate!) In college, I was fortunate enough to take an advanced genetics course with a professor who had authored a genetics text--I learned from a master of the subject and strive to emulate his teaching.
I graduated from New Jersey Medical School, where I was enrolled in their 7-year, dual-degree BA/MD program with Drew University. I graduated in May, 2001 and then completed two years of residency in family medicine at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL.
I did not need a good score on the MCAT to enroll in medical school since I was accepted when I was in high school. The school did require that I sit for the test. Without any test preparation, my score was still in the top half of my medical school class. I have had 12 years of experience preparing students for rigorous, standardized tests, such as the MCAT and am ready to help other future doctors earn high scores on this exam.
I tutor all sections of the SAT, and I only use college board materials. I have used effective, student-centered strategies that have been improving student scores for over 11 years. The Math SAT can sometimes generate nervousness or fear that can limit a student's score, and I address these concerns and help my students figure out how to rise past these barriers to success. Using simple tricks and tools, I help students raise their Math SAT score.

I have been a teacher in independent schools for the past 10 years. I have taught many students with special needs, including ADD, ADHD, dysgraphia, OCD, and dyslexia. I have successfully prepared students with many of these learning challenges for standardized tests such as the SAT, SSAT, and the ACT. I strive to help students find their inner confidence as they work to overcome their challenges.
My unique background as a graduate of medical school who completed two years in family medicine residency also qualifies me to better understand the medical issues associated with many learning challenges.
