About Dean

I have a TESOL certificate from the International Language Institute and have been actively tutoring and teaching English as a second language in the Washington DC area for over three years. My specialties are reading, grammar, and writing. I have been published twice and have consistently contributed to monthly journals and reports for various organizations. However, preparation for the TOEFL exam is a key part of my experience. I have taught and tutored TOEFL students from all over the world. My students are from all age groups and economic backgrounds. In addition to TOEFL, I have taught preparatory classes for the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). I can provide references on request.

I have traveled to many places around the world and think of myself as being sensitive to other cultures and languages. I have been to many countries in Asia as well as South and Central America.

When teaching, I try to keep the student engaged, keeping the pace high, especially in a group situation. In one-on-one situations, I try to work with the student's specific needs.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have a TESOL certificate from the International Language Institute as well as a Technical Writing Certification from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Engineering Department.
I presently teach part-time for the Washington English Center, formerly Language ETC. I work with students from all over the world and from a wide variety of backgrounds.

Grammar

As an ESL instructor for two different schools over the last 3-plus years, grammar has been an integral part of each program. I am well versed in several different texts, but specifically really on the book by Azar, Understanding and Using English Grammar. On average, I teach grammar a minimum of 6 hours per week on subjects ranging from use of articles, to parallelism, and subject/verb agreement.

Reading

As an ESL instructor for the last three years, I have taught reading at the TOEFL level for a minimum of 8 hours per week. The reading program is always integrated into the writing program and my students write on what they read. I encourage students to read aloud and correct them as we go. Hands-on work with dictionaries to learn pronunciation is also essential.

TOEFL

I have taught TOEFL-prep courses for over a year. My students come from all over the world and are part of an intensive program to get them ready for the TOEFL exam. Preparations also include the IELTS exam as well. I teach reading, writing, and grammar. I also correct TOEFL speaking tests and am well-versed in what is required to pass the TOEFL in that regard.

Writing

I have written professionally for almost 10 years. In addition to weekly corporate reports, I have had my own research work published on two different occasions. My writing classes begin with an introduction to basic paragraph form moving on to essay formats. I provide hands-on experience as well as outside documentation. I make sure that my students understand the various methods for developing introductory paragraphs, body paragraphs, and conclusion.
