About Rumbi

My love affair with literature began when my father grew tired of reading Winnie the Pooh (again). I decided to sound it out myself that night! Today, I am a professional writer, researcher, and analyst who loves to share my enthusiasm for the written word with students. I encourage students to express themselves through their writing and better understand their world through reading. I use remediation, coaching, homework help and anything else that may fit you or your child's reading and writing needs. Over the past five years, I have worked with college and high school students as a tutor and teacher of various political science and international studies courses. I help students demonstrate their comprehension of social science topics with clear, concise, and thoughtful essays or interactive debates.

During the hectic college admissions season, I focus on helping high school seniors complete their admissions packages: this includes drafting, editing and finalizing essays as well as proofreading the entire submission. I worked as an admissions reader for the University of Miami and in that position, I reviewed applications based on the standards of admission and also flagged students outside of the guidelines for further consideration. I have also helped high school students prepare their applications for college in addition to reviewing the competitiveness of their coursework and extracurricular activities.

My goal as a tutor is to create a positive environment where I can motivate students to engage in both analytical and critical thinking, thus improving their reading comprehension, writing skills, and subject knowledge. I believe a strong reader can more easily become a strong writer in any subject! I prefer to work with students 1-on-1 and in small group settings which allows students to ask questions without feeling intimidated or worrying about the pace of the class. A small writing group can also provide encouragement and feedback to fledgling writers.

On a personal note, my father was a history professor at a state college in South Carolina and, as a child, I spent many summers reading books in his office or in the university library. During the school year, I performed in plays and competed in public speaking and essay competitions. I truly believe that my students' success is my success. I invest in each and every one of my students. My goal is for each of my students to not only feel successful but BE successful.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I worked as an admissions reader for the University of Miami. In this position, I reviewed applications based on the standards of admission and also flagged students outside of the guidelines for further consideration. I have also helped high school students prepare their applications for college in addition to reviewing the competitiveness of their coursework and extracurricular activities.

English

I have experience helping high school and college students conceptualize, draft, write, and proofread essays ranging from 3-20 pages. My PhD in International Studies included a writing requirement; I completed 4 courses with research and writing projects of 20 pages or more. I also work as a freelance editor of fiction books.

Political Science

I have an MA and PhD in International Studies and Political Science, as well as a BA in Political Science. I co-taught 6 undergraduate classes in Political Science, including Intro to Political Science. I have also tutored college students in the subject, often using a mix of textbooks, contemporary authors and current events.

Study Skills

In graduate school, I assisted 6 student-athletes with their study skills by creating study plans, calendars, and deadlines as well as reviewing their techniques to study, retain and recall information. Personally, I completed an MA and PhD in 5 years by creating a short- and long-term plan, which included mechanisms for accountability. I'm confident I can create a tailored plan for a student to complete their work efficiently and with care as well as refine their study skills to do so.
