About Amber

My love for teaching comes from being a lifelong learner. I received a bachelor of arts degree in special education and elementary education with the honor of Magna Cum Laude. I have learned valuable skills and strategies to teach children. I currently teach students in grades K-3 at a local elementary school in all subject areas.

I specialize in tutoring for students in K-5 in all subject areas. Providing individualized instruction and meeting the needs of each student is my primary goal as a tutor. I use current practices, skills and a variety of materials to cater to the needs of the child. Integrating technology and hands-on activities is something that I look forward to that will help students to understand a concept. In tutoring lessons, I will tailor to the needs of the child using a variety of strategies to help students to succeed inside and outside of the classroom.

I am flexible with time and would prefer a 24-hour cancellation policy. However, if something comes about last minute I am happy to reschedule.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you or your child succeed!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am currently a Special Education/Elementary Education teacher in the local school district. A majority of my students qualify for Special Education services under ADHD/ADD; they receive extended test time, frequent breaks, minimal distractions and preferential seating. I use lessons that are engaging, keep the mind going and engage students in their activities. Students are on behavior plans and their goals are contingent to their behaviors and academic work.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a state certified teacher to teach students in K-6th grade in the state of Maryland and Virginia. I have passed the Praxis 1, 2 and PLT for these grade levels as well. I currently teach students in 5th grade special education, while finding the best practices for each student. I previously taught special education for students in K-5 for three years. I use 21st century skills and best practices to meet the needs of all students. I engage students and work with each based on their individual needs while building their academic achievement.

Phonics

Phonemic awareness is an area that many of the students I have taught have difficulties with. One way that I have helped students with phonics is by doing word studies. Through our word studies students have the opportunities to make connections and analyze words that will help them decode unfamiliar words. With practice, word families and word sorts students are able to increase their knowledge in the area of phonics.

Reading

I am currently finishing up my last semester of graduate school in reading. I use current research and best practice for all my students. I have experience in reading intervention programs in the areas of decoding and comprehension.

Special Needs

I am currently teaching in special education/elementary education setting. I am dual certified to teach in each area and have taken the Praxis 1, 2 and the PLT as well as the content knowledge for both areas. I modify instruction and accommodate to students based upon their IEP and needs. I use current research in reading, writing and math to ensure all students needs have been met.

Spelling

Attended workshops on spelling and phonics for students in elementary school.
