About Steph

I am a DC Public Charter School 2nd grade teacher in NE DC. Teaching is my career and passion. I have 10 years of tutoring experience and 5 years of teaching experience in a classroom setting.

I can happily tutor in all subjects for elementary students and can tutor in English and Writing for middle school. I would be interested in Science and Math as well, depending on the unit being discussed; however, as a Journalism major, writing is my forte.

Half of my current class has an Individual Education Plan (IEP) set in place because of their special needs. Some have a 504 Plan as well. I work with them in a small group setting in order to strengthen their foundation skills in all subjects. My teaching has yielded great results. I have a lot of experience working with children who come from different backgrounds/ possess different learning styles.

Whether your child has difficulty staying organized, lacks study skills or simply needs to be challenged, I have a positive remedy for all academic concerns and take pride in the results that are achieved.

I am looking forward to working with your child by teaching them that they can do anything they put their mind to.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

With over 3 years of experience tutoring students with ADD/ADHD, my patient demeanor has proven to mesh well with students, ensuring that they are learning and focused. I have experience tutoring ADD/ADHD students in the following subjects: Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1,English and Physics. My teaching style adapts to their learning style which enables me to be able to tutor ADD/ADHD students in any of my subjects listed within my profile.

Discrete Math

Discrete math is also referred to as Finite Math and encompasses a wide range of non-recurring math concepts(excluding calculus). Through taking and excelling at Finite Math, I have first hand experience of the concepts that are studied and what the professors' expectations are. As a tutor who specializes in Math, I can help students with this tricky subject which is a mixed bag of concepts.

Elementary (K-6th)

I completed the Praxis exam for ELEM ED.: CONTENT KNOWLEDGE (0014/5014) and ELEM ED.: CURRICULUM, INSTRUCTION, & ASSESSMENT (0011/5011) passed both. The scores are still on file and valid. Report can be provided upon request.

Hebrew

Throughout elementary school I attended Hebrew School which enabled me to read and write Hebrew. This beauty of this language piqued my curiosity which led me to take 2 years of Hebrew in college to fulfill my foreign language requirement. I was very successful with my coursework and can tutor Hebrew 1 and Hebrew 2 level students, as well as provide bar and bat mitzvah tutoring.

Praxis

I successfully completed the Praxis exam and after studying and completing it, I have first hand experience of the expectations and format of the exam. I can tutor in all 3 of the exam subjects: C-PPST: Reading (5710), C-PPST: Writing (5720), C-PPST: Math (5730). The possible score range is 150-190 with the average performance range as 173-178. I scored above average in all areas with a 181 in Reading, 182 in Writing and was 4 points shy of a perfect score with a 186 in Math. Score report can be provided upon request.

Study Skills

I am qualified to tutor in study skills and have been tutoring this subject through Educational Connections. I am a first grade teacher with DC Public Charter Schools and frequently work with children who have special needs and IEPs set into place, so they need a one-to-one environment and help with study skills. I am also in the process of completing an "Executive Functioning Boot Camp" workshop which focuses on strategies for teaching study skills and time management.
