Learn AND have fun?? Blasphemy, if you ask some people; essential, if you ask me.
After a dozen years in the corporate grind, I'm over it. I'm finally pursuing what I love -- writing, languages and teaching. I'm nearing completion of my second book. I also teach Swedish through a local non-profit (was an exchange student many moons ago), an experience that helped me realize how much I love teaching. I'm planning on transitioning to full-time teaching within a year, and have been freelance tutoring for over a year now. My main areas of concentration have been: English/composition, reading/writing, ESL, government/social studies, exam prep (i.e., GRE, SAT), history, government and study skills. I have also tutored elementary math and am comfortable up through pre-Algebra. That's my nephew in the pic -- I love kids and have worked with ages 4-18, but I also work with many adults primarily on ESL, exam prep and essay composition.
When it comes to teaching and learning, my methodology is quite simple -- don't just tell students facts; tell them as much as possible WHY things are the way they are -- context and perspective can go a long way toward helping students to not just memorize a fact, but to truly conceptualize. I look forward to helping you or your student get over the hump with your/their academic challenges. If I cannot help you with the subject at hand, I will not waste your money or anybody's time and will do my best to refer you to someone who can.
I typically meet clients either in-home or at the library, but I am flexible within Arlington and the DC Metro area. My hourly rates are extremely competitive and I am more than happy to provide references. Thank you and have an awesome day! Learn AND have fun?? Lincoln worked very well with my 17 year-old son on his SAT preparation. Lincoln was willing to accommodate my son's schedule and appears to be very patient and knowledgeable.
Thanks Lincoln. This is exactly what I need from a tutor to keep him on task and do his assignments.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been tutoring 2 boys ages 6 and 8 in various subjects with WyzAnt for about a month. I am also writing a children's novel for kids ages 8 to 12 and have experience volunteering with kids in the K to 6th grade range as well.
I served as an assistant in an ESL program run by my Spanish high school teacher for a year. I have studied Spanish since grade school, it was my Minor in college, and I also have experience teaching a foreign language other than English - I have taught 5 semesters of Swedish through a non-profit organization called the Global Language Network.
I have played golf since I was 8 years old. In high school, I was on the golf team and won 3rd in Districts my junior year. I still play to about a 10 handicap despite not playing as often as I would like these days. I also provide ongoing golf instruction to my 16 year old cousin who is learning the game.
I have taught foreign language classes in both Swedish and Spanish (currently with the former). I am also currently tutoring 4 students ranging in ages from 8 to 35 on a variety of topics, and 3 of the 4 I am helping to improve their studying skills in one capacity or another. Please feel free to contact me through WzyAnt if you need more detailed information.
