SMU - Southern Methodist University (Graduate Coursework)
I have taught reading, writing, literature, science, math up through trig and social studies in public and private schools, grades 4-12. My most fun project was creating a small private school for serious athletes. (One of my former students won a bronze medal in men's gymnastics at the Bejing Olympics!)My curriculum allowed students to make above-grade-level progress in only four hours a day, with little or no homework. (The secret - we didn't waste time.)My high school students began taking college level English and math classes at the community college when I deemed them ready. Two were only fifteen. All my students were so successful that the president of the college sought me out to learn what I was doing. Some of my favorite moments in teaching include: working with a fifth grader who could not read and an eighth grade algebra student who had not mastered basic math. Both students were up to grade level by the end of the academic year. My skill is in assessing exactly where a student's strengths and weaknesses lie, then making fast progress. I communicate well with children and have never met a student who could not learn. I relocated to Arlington after my quadriplegic son graduated from Duke Law School. When I am not taking care of his medical needs, I love working with young people. I have taught reading, writing, literature, science, math… Read more
She is teaching my Math. She is a Knowledgeable and patient tutor. She helped me to understand the concepts more clearly.
Lauri was excellent when teaching math to our nine-year-old daughter. She arrived with good ideas for activities and was both enthusiastic and encouraging. Our daughter typically does not enjoy learning math for any length of time, but she easily spent an hour with Lauri and had no complaint. Afterwards, Lauri sent a thorough evaluation of the session, including our daughter's strength's and weaknesses. I would definitely recommend her.
Our daughter has been working with Lauri for several months. Lauri is patient, kind, and intuitive. She relates well to our daughter and is both positive and encouraging. We have felt really fortunate and blessed to have her working our daughter. We would definitely recommend her to anyone.
Lauri has been great. She is very patient. She knows her stuff. She explains difficult math problems in a very easy digestible way. And she has been very responsive and accommodating to all our schedule changes. We love Lauri!
I found Lauri's advice to be very helpful. I appreciated how she took the time to go into great detail regarding the suggestions that she made. Lauri's understanding of the art of writing was very extensive.
My son has been working with Lauri for about a month, and I believe she is one of the true teachers of this world. While algebra may be a specialty of hers, you can tell teaching in general has been a huge part of her life. She understands and relates to my son, who has struggled for years with a learning style that has never been very successful in the traditional, mainstream school system. My son is making great strides working with Lauri. We are also very grateful for her willingness to suggest and try innovative approaches!
My son met Laurie for the first time on Thursday evening. Laurie is going to help him fine tune his writing, and hopefully, get him to enjoy writing instead of treating it like a chore! She was great breaking the ice with him and had a super topic (funny pet stories) all picked out. She really encouraged him, gave him praise and worked to find out the parts of writing he doesn't like and talk him through those steps! And, he really liked her...they had a good time, but I could feel his confidence growing. After one meeting, I couldn't be happier. She is a great match for my son!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught grades 4-12. Two things help a child feel confident and prepared to do his or her best on the HSPT and future standardized tests. The first is having solid academic skills. The second is feeling comfortable working in the testing environment. I help students develop test-taking skills and work on any academic weakness. I am a licensed teacher and have taught grades 4-8 in public and private schools. Strong reading, writing, and math skills are the foundation for successful completion of the verbal and quantitative skills, reading, mathematics, and language portions of the HSPT. (Please let me know if the school requires any of the optional tests for science, mechanical aptitude, or religion.)
The key to successful preparation for the verbal, reading, and language sections is just to read as much as possible. I excel at helping students to find books that they are excited to read on their own. I have had unenthusiastic middle school readers picking up Tolstoy and Shakespeare in one semester. I help families to establish habits that enhance the test prep and guarantee future academic success.
I am comfortable teaching writing - from basic spelling, vocabulary, and sentence construction to research papers and creative fiction.
I have an extensive background in mathematics rarely found in elementary teachers. Beyond memorizing facts, I help children to see how math applies to real life.
I am a licensed teacher and have taught grades 4-6 in public and private schools. Strong reading, writing, and math skills are the foundation for future academic success.
I have taught every aspect of reading from sound and word recognition through the skills necssary to read great literature. For emergent readers, selection of books that will capture their attention is paramount. I am familiar with children's literature and can help with recommendations - even for boys. I've had 6th graders reading Tolstoy and Shakespeare.
I am comfortable teaching writing - from basic spelling, vocabulary, and sentence construction to research papers and creative fiction. I have worked with a student whose severe spelling deficit masked a gifted storyteller, building his confidence and skills.
I have an extensive background in mathematics rarely found in elementary teachers. Beyond memorizing facts, I help children to see how math applies to real life. I have taken an 8th grader who did not know her addition facts and had her ready for algebra in one school year. I have also taught algebra and geometry to a gifted 3rd grader.
I work with parents so life-long learning habits are established. Children naturally enjoy learning. My goal is to make sure the whole family feels good about the time we spend together.
I am a professional teacher who has been trained to teach reading at all levels. In both my undergraduate education training and subsequent re-certification classes, I have received training in phonics instruction. In the classroom and tutoring, I have helped students use phonics to learn to read and to sound-out new vocabulary words. I also have a background with Latin and German pronunciation rules that are useful at the secondary level when encountering words that seem to have no reasonable pronunciation.
I have taken several classes in public speaking and taught public speaking for 2 years in a private instructional setting. Public speaking has two very distinct components: content and delivery. You have to have something to say, and it must be said in a way that engages the audience. I teach students to: (1) consider the audience; (2)develop a theme and supporting ideas; (3) enrich the content with memorable stories, facts, and other materials that engage the audience; and (4) practice a comfortable delivery.
I am a certified classroom teacher and have taught primary and secondary students. Study skills can range from: (1) practicing a skill repeatedly until it is mastered, to (2) memorizing facts, to (3) figuring out how to learn on your own, to (4) discovering, (5) to researching, etc. As a teacher, my job is to help students recognize what skill is needed and help them to plan their learning.
