I am a retired high school teacher, from Rustburg High School in Campbell County, where I taught Art, Art History, and Photography. I was also a Homebound Instructor for Campbell County for nine years, mostly for middle and high school students, and covered all of the core subjects. I was particularly successful in helping students understand Algebra and Geometry. My educational background includes a Bachelor of Science degree from Liberty Baptist College in Pastoral Ministries, and a Master of Education in Instruction degree from the University of Virginia. I have also taken the prerequisite courses to maintain my license and certification for teaching from the state of Virginia.
Tutoring has always been a joy for me because it provides an opportunity to help a student achieve success in his or her academic career. Tutoring allows me, as an instructor, to match the instructional method with the student, and allows me to guide the student in the comprehension of the subject content on a personal level, with immediate feedback, which is often not able to be duplicated in a classroom setting. As in all teaching, I like it when I see the look in a student's eyes when "a light bulb comes on," and the student "gets it!" I have always been a lover of learning, and I enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience with students.
I was an exceptional math student, and since I understand the subject very well, I am able to communicate the concepts to the student. I help a student understand that Mathematics is a structured series of concepts through which we work with numbers, and that, especially in Algebra, the process is more important than the answer (which is why I encourage students to leave the calculator turned off).
My undergraduate major was in Pastoral Ministries, with a minor in Biblical Languages, and I have pursued the study of Scriptures since my salvation in 1979.
I have a great affinity for photography, both as an artist who appreciates the intuitiveness of the medium, and as an instructor who enjoys passing on the knowledge needed for a student to be successful in photography.
I have a passion for teaching, and I am willing to work along side of any student who is striving to master any subject; is seeking to sharpen his or her learning skills; and is moving toward a successful completion of an academic career.
