About Nathan

I love to learn and love to teach!

And then I love math, which is why I majored in it at the University of Pennsylvania. But just because I love math doesn't mean it always came easy. No, I definitely know what it's like to be frustrated and stumped, and this is one of the reasons I tutor here on Wyzant. I want to help students know the benefits of a little time and effort mixed with the right mindset. I want people to learn what I did: that math is possible and rewarding for all types of students!

I offer tutoring for all high school or college math classes through calculus, and I am available for statistics, at the AP or introductory college level. I am also comfortable tutoring for standardized test prep. As a teacher in South Korea for nearly two years, I specialized in standardized test (TOEFL) preparation and know a number of strategies that can come in handy for many standardized tests, such as the SAT or ACT.

Beyond my two years' experience teaching English and TOEFL, I have university experience as a tutor in statistics and German. I also have volunteered as an ESL and GED teacher.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have a math degree from the University of Pennsylvania. I have tutored extensively in math, including Algebra 1.

Algebra 2

I studied math and economics at the University of Pennsylvania and so am a proficient tutor at all levels of math through calculus. I have tutored extensively in math, statistics, German, and ESL as an undergraduate. After college, I worked for two years as an ESL teacher in South Korea, where I also taught study skills and standardized test prep.

ESL/ESOL

Teaching language and especially ESL/ESOL has been a passion of mine for several years. I taught ESL/ESOL for two years at a leading Korean education company, where I specialized in TOEFL Jr. and TOEFL. In college, I volunteered at a local non-profit organization teaching ESL/ESOL to adult refugee students, and I also tutored German to fellow undergraduates. Additionally, I hold an ESL/ESOL certificate from ITTT (International TEFL and TESOL Training).

German

I learned German as a high school exchange student in Germany. Of my fifty-student cohort, I scored the highest on our end-of-year language evaluation. At the University of Pennsylvania, I took upper-level German courses, earned a formal German certificate on my degree, and tutored other undergraduates through the German department. Other teaching experience and credentials include a graduate-level course in teaching German as a non-native language and 2+ years' experience as an ITTT-certified ESL teacher in the US and Korea. As a non-native German speaker myself, I can understand the common mistakes and difficulties students encounter, and perhaps most importantly, I just love the German language!

Precalculus

I have a degree in economics and mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania. I also hold a minor in statistics and have tutored numerous students in this subject, as well as math, over the years. I am confident in most any math subject through calculus, as well as statistics, probability, and basic actuarial math.

TOEFL

I have taught TOEFL and TOEFL Jr. for nearly two years in South Korea. Prior to that, I earned an EFL certificate and accrued hundreds of hours of EFL teaching experience.
