About Ted

Hello!

My name is Ted, and I have been working in education for over twenty years. I always tell my English students that there are two basic arts to English composition: simplifying the complicated and complicating the simple. This reality is as true for a middle school student writing his book report on To Kill a Mockingbird as it is for a graduate student writing her thesis on Toni Morrison. In addition, the writing skills I teach are transferable to all disciplines where English communication is necessary, and yes, of course, they directly increase the scores of standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, and TOEFL.

That said, it is my experience that excellence can be achieved while students are having fun! I work from a broad and diverse set of resources to custom tailor a unique curriculum for each of my students. The first thing I do is talk to my student. Getting to know my student precedes diagnostic testing in both sequence and importance. This is not only true to spare all parties time and money due to a bad match or fit. This is is also true because if my student responds positively to me, and lets me know who he or she is and what he or she likes and does not like, then I can use almost all of this information to to teach English. The ideal is to create an environment where the student feels comfortable asking questions, learns to view mistakes as fantastic learning opportunities, has fun while learning, and excels while learning that language mastery is a relevant extension of the student's individual self.

If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
