Hi! I'm David. I tutor saxophone, math, and test prep.

I have a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pittsburgh in Music with a specialization in Jazz, and my main areas of expertise are music theory, jazz, and saxophone. I have been playing the saxophone since the 7th grade, and playing jazz seriously since the 10th grade. I have a lot of experience with both classical and jazz styles, and have an abundant amount of material to help advance your saxophone skills, whether you are an advanced high school student or a complete beginner. As with the other subjects I tutor, I make sure that all of the foundational weaknesses are smoothed out with consistent, slow practice. Since practicing an instrument, in the traditional sense, is quite slow and meditative, it can disengage the student. I have found various ways of improving weaknesses that are not only slow and deliberate, but also much more fun for the student than both traditional practice and high-speed practice, keeping the student engaged for longer.

If you are looking to be tutored in the SAT/ACT, I would be a good fit. Deciding which test I would take back when I was starting my standardized test preparation I looked in depth at the components of each test, and decided that the ACT was the test for me. When I took the ACT back in my Senior Year of High School I got a 34 Composite, with a perfect 36 on the Math Section. My area of expertise is the Math section, and I would only recommend reaching out if you mainly have trouble with the math portions of Standardized Tests. I have material and tips for the other sections, but I am not nearly as well-versed in those sections as I am with the Math sections. This is also the reason why I tutor all Math subjects before Calculus, as these are the subjects that are covered in the Standardized Tests. I also have plenty of resources in those subjects, in case we need material to work on.

If any of this interests you, message me and we'll get to work!

Elementary Math

I got A's in all my Elementary Math classes, even though I was a year ahead in the curriculum. With the foundations set by these classes I went on to score perfectly on the ACT Math Section (36/36) and the AP Calculus AB Test (5/5). I try and teach beyond memorization, and tackle the more foundational understanding of math itself that the curriculum in these grade levels are trying to establish.

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I took Algebra 1 in 7th Grade and got an A in the class. With the foundations set by this class I went on to score perfectly on the ACT Math Section (36/36) and the AP Calculus AB Test (5/5). I understand not only the equations and how to use them effectively, but also the concepts that allow these equations to work, which I teach to create a more foundational understanding of math itself.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I took Algebra 2 in 9th Grade and got an A in the class.
Geometry,

Geometry

I took Geometry in 8th Grade and got an A in the class. With the foundations set by this class I went on to score perfectly on the ACT Math Section (36/36) and the AP Calculus AB Test (5/5). I have been playing saxophone since the seventh grade, and have performed in a variety of settings. I have played for my high school concert and jazz bands, I played with an after school small jazz ensemble that performed internationally, and I have performed at the Navy Band Saxophone Symposium. I have a deep knowledge of the saxophone and will be able to help you with anything from basics, to classical and jazz repertoire.

Knowledgeable, Great with kids, extremely patient

My son understood David's teaching, but I like also that he challenges my son and makes sure that he gets it! I'm thankful for Wyzant and David. My son was having a hard time with algebra and David helped him chip away and some of the confusion.

Knowledgeable, organized tutor, finding individual approach to each student

My 6grader daughter is studying math with David. He is fantastic! Foremost he is very knowledgeable in materials he teaches, he can deliver it very efficiently, however fun! He is very organized and systematic. Moreover, quoting my daughter, he sense your "mood" and adapt a lesson to your abilities that day, be patient and make the lesson comfortable. I think he is doing some kind of magic, because my daughter hated math before, could say only negative stuff and would resist to do any additional lesson (besides school). Now she is happy to study with David, improved her grades and most importantly, her confidence! David is great!

Best ACT math tutor

David is a very smart tutor for ACT math. We like his teaching method. His first lesson would find out the student's weakness and strength, and then he focus on what a student needs to improve. He is very good at encourage a student so that a student will have confidence to do better in the next time. He also assign homework for a student to do at home and then review each question in the next leeson. The best thing we like David is he always work out the best way or shortcut for the question that a student had difficulty. Thank you David.

Pleasant, bright, engaging, charismatic

Communicates ably and relaxed, so as a student one relaxes. Gives guidance as to what to practice, and how to practice. All will be up to how I progress, but feel this young gent will be a very good asset.

Knowledgeable, kind, and highly organized tutor.

My 10-year old son has been taking biweekly saxophone lessons with David, and we couldn't be happier! David is highly organized, knowledgeable, and patient. He supplies all the learning materials needed for the lessons. My son is making great progress and always looks forward to his lessons. If you are looking for a saxophone teacher, we highly recommend David. As an accomplished and talented player himself, he can teach more advanced levels as well.
