Hi! I'm David. I tutor saxophone, math, and test prep.

Hi! I'm David. I tutor saxophone, math, and test prep.

Before I get into my qualifications, I want to outline my teaching philosophy that applies to all of the subjects I tutor. My teaching philosophy is that slow, consistent practice is better than fast, unfocused practice. I make sure in each of my sessions to figure out the root of the problem that the student is having, isolating that issue, and doing slow deliberate practice on that issue until it is resolved. Establishing a firm foundation is key to learning and advancing, so that is why I focus so much on it. For every topic that I teach, I have an abundant amount of material to smooth out the issues and gain confidence. Now onto my qualifications!

I am a Music Major at the University of Pittsburgh on the Jazz Track, and my main areas of expertise are music theory, jazz, and saxophone. I have been playing the saxophone since the 7th grade, and playing jazz seriously since the 10th grade. I have a lot of experience with both classical and jazz styles, and have an abundant amount of material to help advance your saxophone skills, whether you are an advanced high school student or a complete beginner. As with the other subjects I tutor, I make sure that all of the foundational weaknesses are smoothed out with consistent, slow practice. Since practicing an instrument, in the traditional sense, is quite slow and meditative, it can disengage the student. I have found various ways of improving weaknesses that are not only slow and deliberate, but also much more fun for the student than both traditional practice and high-speed practice, keeping the student engaged for longer.

I got A's in all my Elementary Math classes, even though I was a year ahead in the curriculum. With the foundations set by these classes I went on to score perfectly on the ACT Math Section (36/36) and the AP Calculus AB Test (5/5). I try and teach beyond memorization, and tackle the more foundational understanding of math itself that the curriculum in these grade levels are trying to establish.

I have been playing saxophone since the seventh grade, and have performed in a variety of settings. I have played for my high school concert and jazz bands, I played with an after school small jazz ensemble that performed internationally, and I have performed at the Navy Band Saxophone Symposium. I have a deep knowledge of the saxophone and will be able to help you with anything from basics, to classical and jazz repertoire.
